LEV (Low Emission Vehicle) Engine - Does it affect electrical power?

Dear all,

I own a new 2002 GLI AUTO Civic (Aust) - not VTEC. I have posted in this forum about : My headlights, interior lights dimming briefly when I take myfoot off the pedal.

Honda Australia said this 'dimming' is a feature of the car. They said during normal drive, the electrical power is outputed in a lower voltage to reduce petrol consumption, thus making the environment greener. Then when I turn on my rear demister, more power is required and the computer will switch to more power. This makes everything stable, ie no flickering.

My question is : is this a characteristic of the new HONDA LEV engine found in many new Honda cars these days? Honda Australia said this 'dimming' is a characteristic of all new vehicles. I know the Civic in America has LEV or ULEV, do you experince this?

If I had know about this 'flickering', then I would not have purchased a new Civic. This is very annoying. I do not know why they would design something that will make the lights flicker. I felt totally lost and unable to love my new car. I am thinking of taking this issue up to the Consumer Affair because I didn't know about this 'flickering' before I bought the car. I felt cheated.

Honda is sending me a T-shirt for all the trouble I have gone through...

dude they are telling you a load of crap. mines a 2001 civic lx and its a ulev and it never dimms, never has since i bought it. i would start recording how many times you went to the dealer to complain and who you talked to. if they continue to send you on your merry way with the "oh all new hondas are like that" speech, then see consumer affairs or maybe if the dealer sees you writing in your little notebook and hears you say "im sorry, what's your name again" and you write their name down, they'll probably get worried and help you out. the honda dealer over there sounds like the ford dealerships over here. best of luck to ya.

Dude thanks for the encouragement. I have seen the dimming happening on another loan car when i drop mine over for them to check out. I think it is a design flaw in the Australian Civic. Which is ashame. I am waiting for the Consumer Affair to contact me soon. Yes I have been corresponding with Honda Australia in writing, so I have everything in writing. All I can say is I have tried my best to pursue this matter with Honda Aust, no luck. Cunsumer Affair is Chapter 2. Honda Japan Motor Co doesn't seems to be too interested even I have CC the copy to them. They did ask Honda Aust to contact me about their findings. Honda Japan Co said Honda Aust is their distributor and they should be handling it. I am hoping more Australian Civic owners will detect this flaw and complain. I am also planning of leaving notices on all new Civic. I cannot believe buying a new car would result in this. Certainly not a Honda.
