need some help on a 1995 nissan altima
a frined of mine is having lots of troubble with her nissan altima, i know its not a civic but i figure most of you know alot more about cars than me so i thought id see what you all thought. She thinks the problem is possibly some BTSI system(some sort of brake sensor), does this sound possible. Here is her email that describes the problem.
I have a 1995 Nissan Altima that I'm having troubles with. I can start the car just fine, but if it's in Park, I can't get it to shift out of Park. In order to drive the car, I have to either start it in neutral (yes, I can move the shifter around without the car being turned on) or I can start it in the Park position while I'm pushing down the button on the gear shifter. Then I can get to Drive, Reverse, or Neutral as I need to. If I shift back to Park, I have to turn the car off and restart it either in Neutral or with the button pressed.
This used to be a problem only once in a while, and we noticed that when we couldn't shift out of park, our brake lights also weren't working. Now that this is always the case, our brake lights don't work at all. Are the two related?
Thanks!
heh, not the best of descriptions but i thought i would toss it out there...would like to have some knowledge of what might be wrong before it has to go into the shop or if it might be an easy fix

it definetally sound like a brake sensor problem...the same sensor probably controls the brake lights turning on and the safety switch that won't let you shift out of park unless the brake is pressed...I'm now really fimilar with nissans but i'd say your best bet is to have someone replace the brake sensor...let me know what the problem actually is
I'm not trying to flame you but, why didn't you go to a NISSAN board for this? I would trust the answers I get there. The most you'll get here are people "assuming" things about your friends car. Check out the edmunds.com site. there are forums for every specific car made. Either way, I hope you find a resolution to your problem.
