my EX wouldn't start
Yeah thats right, I took my 02 civic on a road trip from cinci. to florida. On the way back I stopped for about an hour. When I went to leave my car wouldn't start. The battery wasn't dead. It just sat there and whirled over. There was nothing wrong that I could see, it just would not start. I let it sit for about five min. and it started right up. Has anyone else had this problem? 02/EX/7500mi.
Three times since Feb. I'm at 24000 KM right now (15000~mi?)...
Happens on random, does seem to be moreso on a hot day rather than a cold day (although Feb was quite cold)... Asked Honda service, of course, no relevant answer, they said they've checked and it's all good.
My old 89 Civ had it's first ever failed turn after 11 years!!! And that was time for a new alternator.
As the saying goes, "they don't make things the way they used to".

please list your mods.....
i know if sometimes you dont start the car right the first time, it can be a pain in the a$$ cause the engine gets a little flooded with fuel.

The only thing I have done under the hood is take the air box off. Does that matter? I just bought it so I haven't had much money to dump into her yet.

This has happened to me too... Just decides to not start ... the only mod i have done is an aftermarket headunit... no amps or anything... only 2500 miles on the car. I haven't made it to the dealer to see whats wrong yet... was there something built into the stock HU? Security or anti theft related?

i have the same problem too, don't know if anyone is around. But sometimes when i try to start my car, it doesn't. So i have to take the key out, try again, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt, anyone know what the problem is? should i take it to the dealer? or will i get some bs answer? also, i have nothing done to my 2002 EX Coupe, thanks
I may be wrong but I think the problem is that there's not enough fuel pressure when you start the car. Leave the key in the on position for a second so that the fuel pump creates enough fuel pressure before you start the engine.
i have an 01 EX and this has happened to me a few times. i called the dealer all worried that she was sick but they told me that basically, it just happens sometimes, especially when you have less than 1/4 tank of gas and on extremely hot or cold days. it'll be fine, i promise!

That doesn't sound right to me, a dealer says that this "happens sometimes" thats total Bull S---!!! A car should always start regaurdless of the tempurature outside or the amount of fuel thats in the tank. How can a dealer even say that over the phone without accually looking at the car. Something smells a bit at that dealer.

I have had the same problem if im really low on gas (such as this morning ). Its just the fuel pressure. And its usually not that it doestn start, it just doesnt start right away, and some are impatient and then flood the engine so its even harder to start unless you wait a little.

Yeah, mine does that too... when its hot and the car was running, then sat for a while. Honda can't pin it down, and it hasn't happened in about a month and a half, so I'm just going to leave it for now.
I have a 02 civic EX and that has happened to me too. Once in a while it would not start. I heard the engine trying to turn over but it doesn't. At first I thougth it was the chip in the immobilzer system and the key but the dealer said "the key is fine." I talked to my cousin, which used to drive a 2000 civic si, and he said that civics need to take awhile before it starts. Just pause when you are turning to the "on" position and then start the engine. The dealer pissed me off cause they said that the car is fine and that they couldn't do anything about it. I think the serivce advisor was rude to me just because of my age. I am a freshman at college. Next time they act like that I am just going to leave tire marks so they have to clean it up. Well anyways, just wait for like 1 or 2 seconds before starting the engine. After doing that I never had any problems.

Does it happen to anyone else when the car is parked on an incline? I'm thinking that the fuel falls back down the line from the engine and there isn't anything there to burn when you turn the key. This has happened a few times while I was parked at work. And it isn't that steep, maybe 3-5 degrees.

My car did that too a couple of months ago when I was in Kansas City. I think it might have been bad gas, because it hasnt done it since, and the dealer couldnt find anything (Imagine that?!)

I have had mine take a couple turns to start on a few occasions. It always happens when I have a 1/4 tank of fuel or less.
I had a 00 accord v6 that would take 3-4 turns to start on occasion and it was brand new. My 93 accord did the same thing from time to time. I never had an instance where the car didn't start w/i 30 secs or so.
I don't know...I have had several hondas and a lot of things people complain about are normal to me. Hondas act weird sometimes. I have had noises pop up and go away. Sometimes something wouldn't work and all of sudden work again w/o ever having another problem.
I don't expect the car to start right up everytime. I think that is unreasonable. However, if your car doesn't start at all, something is definately messed up.

Hot or cold, just ran or not...it happens to me quite often. Usually it's when the fuel is less than 1/2 tank. Probably a fuel pressure problem. Turning the ignition off than back on always fixes it though.
I have a 02 HX.

Man, I've had the same problem too!! Ok, well, back when my car had about 2k miles on it, i tried turning it on, and the car just wouldn't. So i had read in the manual that if for some reason it doesn't turn on, you should press the gas pedal halfway and then turn it on. And so I did, and it worked...
But lately my car has been having trouble turning on, and it's usually after it's been warmed up and everything. Maybe it is the fuel pressure that's the problem. I don't know... just my 2 cents.

mine did that too. it juss goes, '''rrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee". then i have to either take out the key to start again or it will eventually start after a long "rrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee".
I have a 2002 Lx and it has the same starting problem.
Sometimes it takes several seconds of cranking the engine before it actually starts.
Hot days, cold days, normal days, full tank, almost empty tank, it still happens.
We should all write to Honda!! The dealership doesn't believe it would only sometimes happen. It enough of us write to Honda, maybe we wouldn't get the run around at the dealerships anymore...

so... did anyone solve this problem yet.... ? i have a 2002 civic lx. and i just got this car a month ago... and it has happend to me 4 times already... regardless of the weather.. the engine would sound like its turning.. but won't start up... ? and after pausing for like 10 seconds i would start it up again.. and it started right up... i want to take it to the dealer... but i'm afraid they might hold my car for a week.. and then call me back and say there is no problem? do you guys think i should take it to the dealer... to hear the same bs excuse that all of you guys got? "sorry we couldn't duplicate the problem". or "sorry we didn't find any problems"... and also other excuses of its your modified exhaust or your aftermarket headunit, amp, subwoofers... you know, any excuses to say so that honda won't take the blame for it... should i take it in... i'm really getting afraid cause if i don't do anything about this.. then i'm afraid... that this problem willl escalate.. and it will get worse... any suggestions will be appreciated.. thanks
... also forgot to mention that... ITS FREAKIN EMBARRASSING... when you have a brand new car.. and you finish pumping your gas.. and try to start the car.. and the car wouldn't start.. but then a beat up 1985 some kinda car.. on the pump next to you.. would start right up....

The last time i went to the dealer, they of course couldn't duplicate the problem...but, they told me that they think it might be the immobilizer....they said that when it happens keep an eye on the green lighted key in the dash ....if it is blinking rapidly, the immobilizer is preventing the car from starting...it might be just a bad key....so i'm going to start to use my other key and see if it still happens....
If this is happen to others: keep an eye on the green lighted key. Let me know if it is blinking or not when the car is having a hard time starting....
Take it to the dealer and see what else they come up with...it can't hurt...

Happened to before 2 times, It would start, but it would keep turning for a little bit and then it would crank up. Pissed me off too! I noticed they both happened when it was cold in the morning, then I drove and parked it for a while, and staryed it up when it was warm outside.

surprise surprise.... guess what the dealer said.... ? anybody ? they said.. that they did a complete and thorough check up on the car.. and said.. they couldn't find anything wrong with the car... that answer was a freakin surprise to me...
they gave me the same answer that everyone else got.... so gonna go pick up the car later today... and watch the car stall tiem to time.. when its not at the dealer.. and go through this whole ordeal over and over again... damn i'm sick of this crap... you know what i'm going to do... i'm going to get the honda headquarters phone number... and call them and tell them about my problem.. and give them a link to this thread.. and tell them to read all the different messages that people have posted for this problem.... you think this will help? it doesn't hurt to try.. i guess.. man this is pissing me off..
