Oil leak after head gasket replace.

I had the head gasket replaced at a shop last year, but have had an oil leak since. (I know I know, procrastination)

Before I take it back to the shop, I'd like to ask here first.

The leak is coming down the driver's side of the oil pan, I have to wipe it clean every time I change the oil. If I look up the side of the oil pan, I can see a pulley and it looks like the leak is coming from in that area. Any ideas on where it could be coming from? I have to add at least 2 quarts between oil changes.

EDIT: 2002 Civic EX 1.7L

holy crap thats a lot of oil, but maybe some of it is burning rather then leaking

possibilities in that area......

crank seal
cam seal
oil pump
oil pan gasket
valve cover gasket

you will need to remove the timing cover and inspect

Unfortunately, most of it is leaking and there's evidence of such.

if its leaking that bad it could be getting onto your timing belt, that would decrease the belt life quite substantially, i wouldn't put it off too much longer

The shop that did the head gasket replacement charged me nearly $700, so I would hope that a timing belt was included in that so that it's not that old. I'll have to go back and look at my paperwork.

even if it is new, oil on the belt will cause very premature failure

Re: Oil leak after head gasket replace.

$700 for a head gasket change or just for a timing belt job? If the latter, sounds about right. If the former, holy crap, that's a cheap job.

Re: Oil leak after head gasket replace.

Maybe I have missed a few key photos here but really never seen a oil soaked civic timing belt.

Sure the camshaft seal and the oil pump seal can leak, but not sure those kinds of leaks really get onto the belt.

On the flip side, spending @ $25 a year on replacement oil is very cost effective vs. the repair cost of those seals.

Re: Oil leak after head gasket replace.

Update for everyone:

Took the car to the shop that I had the head gasket done at (@xRiCeBoYx it was $700 for the head gasket, not sure what all they replaced) and they diagnosed it as blown crank seal almost immediately. I added 2 quarts to the almost dry engine before I left this morning and it was dry again when I pulled into their parking lot. Oil was pouring out of the bottom of it.

I left it there and they called about 7 hours later saying it was done. Crank seal, cam seal, tensioner, water pump, and timing belt all replaced for $600.
