Talking AC Clutch bearing gone. please Help.

I have a 2004 civic 1.7L . the ac clutch bearing is gone and making loud noise, when ac is on and clutch is engaged the noise is less but still bad. I can see the pulley wobble. I can buy a new pulley with bearing in it for $50. or a whole new reman compressor for $130. My question is how bad is it to just change the clutch bearing pulley? do i need a puller? can you access pulley from under car? how bad is it to change out whole compressor? do i have to remove a bunch of other parts to get compressor out?. i searched and didnt find any info on gen 7 civics. I replaced a compressor and drier in a 1999 civic last year and it wasnt to bad. but this 2004 looks hard. please help. i want to order the pulley or the whole compressor soon but dont know which way to go. thanks

Gravy! Worst parts are the snap rings and setting up clearance to spec.
do i need a puller?
Not normally. I almost never need to, but I do use prybars to wiggle it off.

can you access pulley from under car?
Through the wheel well. Plenty of room

A whole lot more work IMO.
i searched and didnt find any info on gen 7 civics.
There's a ton here in the forums. Much is probably buried, but I've posted a bunch.

Re: AC Clutch bearing gone. please Help.

thanks for the info. I might just buy the reman compressor and take the pulley off of it. then if i need the compressor later i will have it. on the 2004 civic it looks like you may have to remove lots of stuff and maybe lift motor up a little to get the compressor out. so ill try to just change pulley/bearing first. I hope it slides off after i take off the snap ring and doesn't have to be pulled.

Below is a vid on a 6th gen Civic. Purchase a quality snap-ring plier (ex: Klein) if you don't already have one .I used a prybar as Ezone suggested. Pulled the bearing/clutch assembly from a junkyard car for $10. That was 20k miles ago and it's still working well. Pulling one from a junkyard was practice before working on my car.

Re: AC Clutch bearing gone. please Help.

I might just buy the reman compressor and take the pulley off of it.
There's probably no way to know if it will work ahead of time. We have discovered that factory parts oftentimes will not fit an aftermarket compressor, and sometimes aftermarket parts don't fit on a factory unit either.

An aftermarket unit is probably not exactly the same model as the factory unit. As a complete replacement it works, but individual components may not be the same.

Also... new pulley with bearing in it for $50? Is that aftermarket? Surely that's not from Honda for that price... Beware.

or a whole new reman compressor for $130.
That's way too cheap. You might get to discover why the cheapest parts often cost the most.

I hope it slides off after i take off the snap ring and doesn't have to be pulled.
They almost never "slide right off".......Like I said, I usually wiggle the pulleys off with a pair of prybars. It's not real difficult though.

Re: AC Clutch bearing gone. please Help.

thanks again, just watched the video. The pulley is wobbling alot and i fear it might mess up the spline on the input shaft. So i will just buy the whole compressor, and if the clutch is different or it wont shim out correctly i will just press the bearing out and press it into old pulley. or swap the whole compressor but im trying to avoid that as it looks very tight to remove from car. Now i just have to go look to see if I have a 3 wire or one wire elec plug as I see you can order them both ways. thanks again

Bearing is staked in place. If the pulley won't fit the original, just replace the whole compressor.

2001 has a single wire plug. 02-05 have 3 wire plug.

Re: AC Clutch bearing gone. please Help.

Thanks for the Help, been busy but finally got back here. I ended up replacing whole compressor and drier as the old pulley finally locked up and welded itself together. The car wouldn't even start until belt was loosened to slip. I ended up renting evac pump and AC gauges from autozone and put in correct amount of 134a and new compressor works great. thanks for your help. Next job will be new radiator as i noticed it is leaking trans oil from the cooler fitting.
