Cracks in Exhaust Manifold & Noise

According to the dealer, I have cracks in my exhaust manifold. My understanding is this isn't a huge issue --especially as I just passed smog inspection. I spoke to a mechanic I trust and he said not to worry until it becomes an issue.

I have noise that starts to get loud about 40mph. The noise isn't there when I rev the engine in N. It doesn't sound like road noise, although I can hear that behind this other noise. The noise is medium pitched rotary sounding that gets louder with speed. Is it possible these cracks are the source? Or maybe other comprimises in the exhaust system? I'm hesitant to believe that simply because I passed the smog.

This '05 LX 4Dr is new to me and my last Civic was a '99 EX Coupe that I haven't had for six years so i don't remember the noises.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

Wheel bearing starting to go out? Tires?

The exhaust leak would sound like air pressure coming out from the manifold area, not a rotary sound dependent on speed.

Installed new wheels and tires yesterday, no noticable change. Didn't think about the bearings...I'll have to look into that. Thanks

Didn't you ask your mechanic about this?

A really bad wheel bearing might sound like an airplane flying beside you, and the pitch changes with road speed.

No, I will next time, I was focused on a few other items when we last spoke...the more digging, the more I think that may be the issue.

That is EXACTALY what it remined me of--a very scaled down GE TF39.

Thanks!

Since you posted this I have been paying closer attention to this issue. In addition to the noise, I feel a occasional sluggesh pull like the wheels are working to spin. I've been driving my Ranger excet for really short trips to avoid further damage.

So my mechanic is going to replace both front hubs and bearings for $200--I'm supplying the parts. He's also going to do a drain & fill of the ATF for $12--again, I'll supply the fluid. Doing this on Monday.

Re: Cracks in Exhaust Manifold & Noise

Work done and it's like I have a new car!

Replaced the front hubs, bearings & lower ball joints. SOOO quiet now :-)

He also mentioned that the transmission had been recently rebuilt--awesome! There were no shavings on the cap when he did the drain & fill. He said the fluid looked okay but I'll probably do another D&F next month when I do the brakes.

Total P&L: $589
