Lower timing belt cover seal
Lower timing belt cover seal
I was in the process of replacing my alternator when I noticed a piece of rubber hanging off the lower timing belt cover. It looks like it's the seal. In the attached pictures, you can see it hanging down, and the gap above it where it should be.
My question is this: is it critical to replace the seal? I'm not exactly sure what it would take to replace it, but from having read around different forums, it looks like a bit of an involved process to get the lower timing belt cover off. I don't have a lot of space to work with (I live in an apartment, and I only have a small parking space in a parking garage for my car), so that kind of limits what I can do.
I'd appreciate any thoughts or advice anyone can give me about this.

Re: Lower timing belt cover seal
The lower timing cover is a PITA to fully remove because the crank pulley needs to be removed to take it off completely. However, in your case you should be able to get away with just removing the lower timing cover's top bolts so that you can pull it away from the engine enough that the seal should go on pretty easily.

Re: Lower timing belt cover seal
Looks like your last timing belt installer was careless, or.......
It's been that way ever since it was misassembled, it's not an urgent or dire situation. It's just a dust seal to keep out rocks, snow, and errant timing cover bolts someone forgot to install....
There's a bolt missing from the hole in the pic.... What else was overlooked or considered not real important?

I figured that while I'm working in that area, I may as well put a bolt in there where it's missing. When I look at the parts diagram, though, it doesn't seem to indicate what kind of bolt it should be:

I can see the hole where the bolt should go, but there's no indication of the correct bolt.
Any thoughts on how to go about figuring out the correct bolt?
