01 Civic EX 4th Gear Problem, Automatic

Hi all,

I searched around and couldn't find solutions to a problem I have with my automatic 01 civic.

The problem I have is when the car shifts into 4th gear for the first time, and ONLY for the first time, it shifts a bit weird. The RPM will spike about 800-1k rpm up and then come down entering into 4th gear. Is this because I am not giving it enough gas and it has to rev up like that? I have tried adding more throttle but have had to same problem. When the car shifts into 4th again after this first shift, even at low throttle, the shift is smooth and you do not feel it.
Currently, my way of getting around this issue is to keep the car in D3 until about 40 mph and then shift it into D for a smooth shift into 4th.

Can anyone offer any help with this?

My car currently has around 110k miles. I have changed the ATF at 70k miles and again at 100k miles. My current ATF level is near the top of the line when engine is warm.

Sounds like early stage of shift flaring: https://www.youtube.com/results?sear...e+transmission

Strongly suggest you use only OEM Honda DW-1. A drain and fill every 3rd or 4th oil change is what I would recommend. But if you have another ATF in there, best get it out with a 3X drain and fill of Honda DW-1.

Not sure which ATF the OP is using but Valvoline Maxlife full synthetic and Castrol (MVI) Multi Vehicle Import blend synthetic are well documented as acceptable substitues.

And yea I've used only OEM Honda DW-1 for my drain/fills.

Thanks for the replies.
