Cranking not starting occaisionally, revving on its own,
My car has been cranking but not starting and needed a jump start after being started less than 30 minutes after it was last turned off. When it does start after having issues it smells like gas. Even when it is working fine and is just sitting stationary it revs on its own. I have tested the battery, changed the air filter, and the spark plugs recently. The car is pretty well stock as of right now aside from an upgraded mid-pipe and muffler, it is a manual 2001. Any help would be appreciated for diagnosis.
Re: Cranking not starting occaisionally, revving on its own,
Did you test the alternator? If it is not charging the battery then it will keep dying. When the car dies the ecu has no power to maintain the fuel map and must do an automated re-mapping process this will cause the revs to climb up and down at idle and can lead to stalling out.
Not sure if it is your problem but test it to be sure.
The fuel smell is probably from being cranked so much without burning any of that gas, because it is not starting. If you have cranked it too much the combustion chambers can be hydrolocked with fuel, Inspect them first before trying to start it.
