2003 Honda Civic EXX Immobiliser woes..

Hi all,

I am new here and this is my first post.. I had to fix my Nephews car and ran into a immobilizer problem,,

WE had the battery disconnected for like 3 weeks and now the car cranks but will not start.. I was googling some things and found out about Hondas Immobiliser and the Green Key light on the dash..

Now I need to get this fixed so we can start the car obviously

I seen a few you tube videos and seen a lot of stuff about you need to take it too the dealer and then they can charge me hundreds to get this fixed..

Now I was wondering if this can be done legally with some tools like a Launch X431 scanner tool.. I seen 1 post where they guy fixed a Toyota with a Paperclip and 30 minutes time..

Now I nor is my sister Rich in any stretch and we are trying to DIY fix.. I would appreciate any help on clearing the immobilizer thingis so we can start the car..

I also wanted to note I seen some videos where the guy was messing with the ECU I do not want to do any soldering or tinkering with that..

So Please if there is a tool I can buy for about 100USD I am all ears that will fix this within my legal limits..

Thank you and look forward to your response..

What do you see that makes you believe the immobilizer is the cause of your no start?

Edit: welcome to the forum!

Re: 2003 Honda Civic EXX Immobiliser woes..

well the green key light comes on the dash and stays on.. now all the videos I seen say that is the immobilizer kicking in and the car will not startr when that light is lit..

I am not here to debate other issues about why the car will not start, as I know for a fact it is the immobilizer if you have an answer can you please tell me. if not well it has been fun but not real fun..

I do believe I found a hand held device that does it but I would like to know for sure if these devices work or if someone knows of a known device to work reliably..

The device I was looking at is a Silica Immobiliser SBB V33 Key Programmer..

I would appreciate an answer only on the immobilizer if you can Please..

I was trying to gather pertinent information that is lacking in your first post.

Immobi light flashing after you turn the key on would be an unrecognized key and subsequent disabling of the engine,

But you say yours keeps the green key symbol light on solid, that's likely to be a bad immobi control unit---assuming no other electrical or electronic failures such as wiring damage or a burned out PCM.

Next question:
WE had the battery disconnected for like 3 weeks
What events preceded leaving the car disabled for 3 weeks?

Re: 2003 Honda Civic EXX Immobiliser woes..

WEll either way I had to replace the headgasket, Water Pump and Timing Belt, if you must know..

I am not positive it if the Green key light just stays on or not but it could be flashing..

the video I seen shows it is imobilised because I had the battery disconnected for so long..

I already checked the big 3 , Air, Spark and Fuel, it has all 3.. Like I said I just need to know how to reenable the imobiliser as that is the problem ..

If you ask me one more time about something else I am not here to discuss anything but how tyo fix the immobilizer..

It is a really easy request. I am not going to blame you or this website if it is not the problem but I am damn near positive that is the ONLY Problem here..

I understand you have tons of people posting things and they really are not mechanically inclined.. I am pretty smart guy highly mechanically inclined been working on Engines since 1978 so I understand that aspect very well..

I have not kept up with the latest electronics since 2000 but Understand them enough.. What I am aksing here is straight Out I do not want to go through the run of the mill questions I don't care what you think''

All I want is an answer to my original post what device can I buy for a hudred USA Dollars that will clear or fix the immobilizer in a 2003 Honda Civic EX with a 1.7l VTEC Engine..

I really don't want to be asked another question.. If you do well then I guess this website is useless and I was just trying it because it was free and I guess that is the old adage you get what you pay for..

I could care less what happens after this but if someone can not just answer a simple question well have a nice day and Good day..

You are talking with one of the best Honda mechanics or any mechanic you will ever find so you definitely got more than you paid for. Too bad you didn't take advantage of it.

Woah there.... Ezone is just trying to help. He's just trying to make sure the problem you "think" you have is really the problem. No need to bash or get upset about.

If you just wanted the answer about the programmer then you could have just used google and see reviews about the unit and see if it works for your application.

Re: 2003 Honda Civic EXX Immobiliser woes..

ezone is trying to get more information out of you in order to help diagnose your problem. As pjb3 mentioned, ezone is a honda mechanic, and he likes to help diagnose problems to prevent our members from spending money on parts that may not fix their issue.

From what it sounds like, you have your mind set on, "this will, without a doubt, fix my issue," where ezone has the mentality of, "not enough information, let me see if I can get some more to see if this will fix OPs issue or not"

That said, by all means, try it out, see if it works, let us know the results.

Re: 2003 Honda Civic EXX Immobiliser woes..

The cheapest option if you are POSITIVE that your immobilizer needs programmed is to take it to a dealer and pay the $100 to have your keys programmed. I have been a honda tech for more than a decade and can count on 1 hand the number of failed immobilizer units I have seen. And disconnecting the battery should NOT cause the car to forget its registered keys.

Can confirm this. Every time I was either a) out to sea (while active duty US Navy stationed on board an aircraft carrier) for an extended period of time (i.e. >2 weeks, including 6-8 month deployments), I would leave my battery disconnected. Upon return to port, my car would never fail to start after reconnecting the battery.

Re: 2003 Honda Civic EXX Immobiliser woes..

Upon thinking about this project whilst wandering around the shop. I gots myself to thinking "which ground wire was left unhooked." Ground 101 is a very important engine ground that also supplies a ground path for the PCM and is on the cylinder head. There are about 3 very important ground wires on the cylinder of that generation of civic.

From time to time we see cars that have a missing pcm grounds due to rodents. Each car presents in interestingly different ways. One had a electronic throttle code that wouldn't go away. Some won't start. Others won't shift gears. Grounds are very important.

Sadly, this forum won't be able to offer any more assistance with avoiding shooting yourself in the foot, Quick Draw.

Between your chosen username and your attitude, I'll suggest you pray to the Deity of your choosing that divine intervention will get the car running.

Have a nice day, and God bless.
