2001 Civic (Overheating)
2001 Civic (Overheating)
Hey everyone i have a 2001 honda civic lx coupe 1.7 and im going crazy trying to figure out why its overheating.... It started a little bit ago right before i had the timing belt and water pump changed.... It seems to only do it on interstate trips like constant driving without stoping, but not around town.... Drove it about 80 miles round trip the other day and got back and was setting in a drive thru and it started to over heat, checked the radiator the next day and the reserve tank was full of coolent, and the radiator took about a half a gallon to fill back up.... Keep in mind this car has a new water pump, radiator, radiator cap, timing belt kit, cam sensor, crank sensor an harness, and also has been tested 2 or 3 times for a blown head gasket and it checked out fine.... No coolent leaking under it anywhere, cold air, an hot heat after a min or two, top radiator hose hot but the bottom was just barely warm at operating temp.... Also no sign of water or coolent in the floor on either side an kinda Slow acceleration from stop up a steep hill....

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Re: 2001 Civic (Overheating)
And a 7th gen civic claims another vicitim....
Sorry to say this dixie but yes this is almost certainly the headgasket by your description. I'd venture to say all almost 7th generation hondas that start overheating (especially when parts start being thrown at it) have a blown head. It is a VERY common problem on this car. There is a new poster here every other week saying "overheating civic" thinking it couldn't be their head gasket, please read that sticky. Take it from someone whose been there. Same weird things happened with my civic. Long distance trips and then BAM overheat, but fine with small distances. Got it tested by multiple mechanics and they said there was no head gasket issue, they did the chemical test, which I think is what most mechanics do. Hondas are weird in this way. Civic gaskets can will fail but won't start showing up in tests or have the typical milky dipstick/white pummels of smoke like say....on a Cadillac. There is usually like a hairline crack or pinhole leak on theses cars, just enough to make the car lose coolant and overheat after an hour but not enough to appear on tests. I know the headaches this car has caused me, I threw away a lot of cash tracking it down. Save yourself some time and money and get it fixed if you have the funds, otherwise sell it.
