A few issues with my 2002 honda civic coupe!
Hey guys, I have a 2002 honda civic coupe LX with about 83,000 miles on it.
The first issue is with my trunk latch, I've had the car for about 6 years and ever since I got it I had to lightly close my trunk otherwise the latch wouldn't lock. A few months ago the piece of white plastic which is attached to the metal loop just broke off, I had to jump in the trunk and lucky was able it close it (for those of you who live in Jersey I go to NJIT so leaving my trunk open was not an option). After a few days I tried to mess around with it and it just doesn't close I always have to just shut it the right way.
Do you guys think I just need to realign the metal loop or buy a new trunk latch all together?
The second issue is a few weeks ago my SRS light came on, meaning there is something up with the airbags. My mechanic said that he doesn't touch anything with airbags and can't even scan it. Any idea what it could be and how much it would cost?
Thanks in advance!

Re: A few issues with my 2002 honda civic coupe!
The SRS problem is probably the belt buckle on the driver's side. This should have a lifetime warranty and will be replaced by the dealer (if you live in the states)
The trunk latch is hard to diagnose over the internet

Trunk:
Latch, striker, or cable. There's not much to it.
SRS:
I think you can DIY the code retrieval. Search for the procedures, I don't have time right now.
There are many other possible causes for the light to be on, but the switch inside the buckle is a very common cause.
Dealers are not obligated to replace the buckles for free just because it caused an SRS code..
If the buckle fails to latch properly however, that would be a valid cause for replacement under the lifetime warranty.

I didn't know that ezone. I thought they had to replace it! Ohhhh well hahaha. Does the light cause the SRS to function differently in any way or is it just a dummy light?

Re: A few issues with my 2002 honda civic coupe!
One scenario:
When they have dual stage inflators in the air bag, the buckle input is used to determine if the driver is belted or not, and the system can decide to fire one stage or the other, or not fire the bag at all.
Depends on the severity of the impact.
Think about how much main airbag deployment force would be needed to restrain (cushion) the driver away from the steering wheel and glass if the person is belted in, versus not belted.
------------
If there are exploding seat belt parts (tensioners), they might be fired alone in a minor collision. (this actually happens often)
When a seat belt is fired, the belt and/or buckle literally tightens up a few inches to keep the driver from flying forward so much.
If the driver is not belted, then firing the belts would be useless and the main airbag would then be deployed.
Probably.
