2004 EX Driver side cv axle

Anyone know what the little rubber thing around the shaft nearly halfway on the Drivers side Drive axle is? I got a replacement part but it doesn't have that on it. Did I get the wrong part?
TIA

It's a counterweight. Long axles have it to counter vibration in the axle, just like how touching a cymbal will stop its sound. All OEM FWD long axles will have one either permanently affixed or clamped in place.

If you want the same behavior as before the swap at high speed, I suggest getting the old one off and clamping it on, preferably with an Oetiker-type crimp clamp, and not a screw-type one.

Ignore it.
It's a damper, some axles have it and some don't.

Most aftermarket replacement axles don't have it, and I don't think any human has ever been able to tell any difference.

I've seen axles break in half where that rubber damper was clamped on. Rust weakened due to trapped water.

I have a hard time believing that OEMs would bother to install one, maintain parts stocks for them, then install them on OEM replacement ones, if it made no difference.

It doesn't have to be felt by the driver to make a difference.

Your choice, OP. The rust-through problem with an axle is going to be far beyond the point where you'd need to replace the axle anyway, and probably where they still use salt to de-ice.

True.

But if OP has an aftermarket axle that has no damper, he still won't be able to tell any difference IMO.
If it fits and works, the car will drive again and all will be well.

The last one I remember seeing at this shop was on a 95 Integra that belonged to my Service Managers' son. CV joints were fine and boots good. Car was probably only 12 years old at that time.
