2001 civic ex 5 speed transmission problems

I have a problem with reverse and fifth gear when I put the car in reverse it has trouble disengaging and fifth seems to have vanished u can put the shifter in fifth and the space is empty does anyone know what would cause this and what it would take to fix

Need to watch shift cable actions at the trans to figure out where the problem might be.
