horrible mileage
hi all, i am experiencing horrible efficiency. when i use to live in upstate ny in the suburbs, i was getting on average 30+ miles per gallon given that most driving was done on highways. i came back down to NYC 4 months ago and i started to decrease in the number of miles every time i fill up the tank. just like today, i filled up almost 10 gallons and the number of miles driven since last fill up was 215!! Thats like 21 miles per gallon. what is going on??! know driving conditions are different down here with the constant stop and go traffic but does it justify the 21mpg?? please help, what should i do?? its no like i rev it too much also. and i have never gotten more than 34 mpg on highway even though the advertised number is 38.
How hard you drive it has a great deal to do with gas mileage, but then again, if you are getting more than 10 miles less than average, you probably have something wrong with the engine somewhere. Have it checked out...
I get about 24-27 Mpg, 3-4 things kill it in my case:
1) Roof rack (kills .28 Cd or whatever the car normally has - now .7!)
2) AEM (takes about 5mpg off the top)
3) Big Rims (another 2 off the top)
4) Drive it like i stole it (thats when i get 24)

I get ~32-33 even when I dog the hay out of the car for an entire tank. Also, my highway mpg is usually the same if not worse than what I normally get in the city. I don't see how in the world you could be getting 22mpg no matter how you are driving the car. I'd take it to the dealer if it keeps happening.

nope, i dont drive it like i stole it and is very careful on my baby as for mods, i don't have any, no rims, no intake, nothing. i dont even have rims yet. all i have is an aftermarket cd player and cd changer. that is all. i hardly even rev it up beyond 2500, even from a total stop. should i be worried?
try resetting your ecu first, take the negative terminal off of the battery for five minutes or so, then spend about an hour driving normally and see if the situation improves on the next tank of gas.
If you are driving it like you say, and don't have any mods, and it's not a day old (and you've changed the oil) then somthing needs adjustment. mabey a bad o2 sensor or MAF or something....

I average about 40 on the highway and 34 in the city(Tampa). Are you using 5w20 like the manual says? I heard that if you use a higher weight oil it may cause a drop in fuel milage, but I dought 8 mpg, thats a big drop.

<< i have never changed the oil myself. i always bring it to the shop to have them change it for me. i change it every 3k miles or so. >>

Did you have the oil changed at the dealer or a local shop? If local does your shop use 5w20 oil?? If they put in 5w30 or higher that may be part of your problem, god forbid they used 10w30. 5w20 was designed in part for Honda to impove gas milage.

At what speed do you travel on the interstate on average?
ziggyziggy69-----a few people have said that their mileage is terrible and the dealer tells them that nothing is wrong and they can't do anything. I don't think there is anything that you could have done to cause such a dramatic loss in your mpg. I would just take it to the dealer and see if they will check the car over.
when i drive on the intersate i go 70mph (because of recent speeding ticket). I get about 38...almost 39mpg. I think that's really good for an engine that's madly spinning away at ~3400 rpms the whole time. impressive!

i always take it to a honda dealership to have my oil changed. always!!!! i hope they didnt mess it up. i called a dealership today and asked about the problem. they said that they can inspect it for me but if there are no defective parts, then i will be charged for the inspection. also they told me i shoulda had a tuneup at 15K miles and my car is at 26K miles. i dunno if that can be the reason. but they said that 21 is reasonable since all my driving is local NYC traffic. i dunno, confused.....

Mbow I normally average 75mph on the highway, a little faster and a little slower. I drive from Tampa to Jacksonville a lot, its about 500 miles round trip. I top off the tank the morning I leave and fill it back up on the return trip outside of Tampa, sometimes I get as much as 42 mpg if I don't have to take it out of cruise and traffic is light and I have a little tail wind coming home.

"...a little tail wind.." LOL
That's about the same speed I travel going from Charlotte to Atlanta and back. I have never gotten better than 36 and I use the speed control and constantly switch lanes and such so I don't have to turn it off and on. I mean I don't know how it could do that good when at 80mph the engine is buzzing away at 4000rpms.

I see you noticed my little tail wind thing, LOL
Really though I have gotten as much as 42mpg but it only happened once but I always get 39 to 40 mpg on the highway constantly. I have no mods, always check tire pressure, wax the car once a month (it does help, ask any Race Car driver) and I never race the car in town. When cruising at 75-80 I don't ususally see the engine running harder than 3500 to 3700 rpm. Unless my speedo is off, I can't explain it but I really do get great milage on th highway. In town (Tampa) rush hour everyday with the A/C on I average 34 to 35 mpg. I love it!!!
