transmission not getting gear
hello guys i have a 2001 automatic civic 110k miles . i have a problem with my tranny and would like some help. two weeks ago i was driving home from work and stopped at a red light and all of a sudden my tranny stopped getting the gears. but the wierd problem is that my tranny still works only for a short period of time maybe like driving a quarter of a mile distance if i turn the car off and on everytime it stops getting the gears. i already changed the tranny oil and no luck, just runs a little longer. also changed the silenoid but still no luck. what could it be? really stressed with not being able to run the car for longer than a quarter of mile with out having to turn off the car for like 5 seconds and turning it back on to get it to run.
any suggestion/advice apreciated

Re: transmission not getting gear
Yeah this. ^^^ When he says "transmission job" he means, and would recommend, a Honda reman vice a rebuild. I'm sure budget will be your big issue, but that's something you'll have to deal with.
Your internal filter is probably clogged with broken down trans fluid/clutch material which is causing you to loose fluid pressure. It probably works for a quarter mile or so when you turn it off because the fluid drains from the filter and when you turn it back on there's just enough filter passage to allow pressure to build up again temporarily(quarter mile in your case) before it becomes clogged again and you stop moving forward. It was probably to little to late to change the trans fluid, but it never hurts. Do you have any service records on when and how often the trans fluid was changed through out the life of the vehicle?
The below youtube video is a break down of a 2001 civic transmission and explains about filter contamination and why you stop moving forward.

Re: transmission not getting gear
thanks ezone and matt! i was thinking it was the filter too but i wanted to get an opinion from pros
and no i dont have any service records i bought it 2 months ago and previous owner had nothing either. well for sure its time for a rebuilt but i have one more question. i know the manual transmission can be pulled out through the top if you remove the thermostat housing and hoses, do you guys think i can pull this automatic one out through the top too or is it too big to fit and has to be taken out through the bottom? thanks in advance

I take them out the bottom.
Yeah it sounded like a plugged up filter, but you don't just replace the filter and think it's over. Wear of the clutches is what plugs up the filter. It needs an overhaul or replacement.

to remove it through the bottom the subframe has to be removed to pull it out correct? im gonna try to remove this at home. im also thinking of just getting a rebuilt tranny and just swapping it in. seems easier to just swap it and it comes with 1 year warranty. thanks ezone

Check other sources, you can probably get a better warranty than 1 year. I'm not sure how any warranty issue would be resolved if you DIY it though.

I'm sure there are others.
If you or anyone else does the job, be sure to flush the ATF cooler that is inside the radiator. You can try it manually, you can replace the radiator, or you may be able to carry your radiator in (to a qualified shop, trans shop or dealer shop) and have them use their cooler flusher on it..
A trans failure can leave debris all throughout the trans fluid system, that includes the cooler.
A factory (dealer) reman trans would come with an inline filter that gets installed in a cooler line, this helps protect the new trans from any leftover debris that might come out of the ATF cooler.

Re: transmission not getting gear
The inline filter comes in a kit packaged with a reman trans from Honda, with tubes and hoses and clamps to be installed up behind the radiator in place of some of the original cooler tubes.
This sucker is SMALL too, it's only like 1.25 inches round x maybe 3 or 4 inches long. It fits places the larger can filter can't fit.
There are replacement filters listed, but I cannot see what, if anything, is included besides the filter-containing part of the filter body, which won't do much good by itself if you don't already have the rest of the kit installed.
It's listed in a Honda Service News June 2002, on the last page. (opens with I.E. only, if it will open for you at all.)

If that won't work then do a search for it.
I found it here http://www.odyclub.com/forums/52-200...tml?perpage=15
I'd imagine the larger inline can filter would do the same job, but it might be harder to place and fit? Comes stock on some CRV, 8th gen Civics, etc.
This is the pic of an 8th gen trans with the larger can filter
