Correct AFR sensor for D17A6 motor
Correct AFR sensor for D17A6 motor
All,
I am looking to replace my AFR sensor in my 2004 HX and wanted to make sure I am using the correct one. I ask this because this is my 3rd one in 70K miles. I have compiled a list of "compatible" AFR sensors and wanted to see if you all had a preference. Also do I need to use the same "brand" for all 3 sensors to insure the best performance/compatibility?

Re: Correct AFR sensor for D17A6 motor
My opinion: Use the brand and part number that was originally installed at the factory.
My info shows only the first sensor is an AFR sensor. The Honda number I came up with was 36531-PLE-305, there is no indication of which brand it was.
Looks like the rear 2 are O2 sensors, and the factory only sells them as a matched set. #06365-PMP-A00
Here's a pic from a matched pair I put in a hybrid the other day (sensors #2 and #3). Read the note that was included in the package (Left pic full size for clarity....and I'm too lazy to resize it.) These were NTK brand in the package.

Re: Correct AFR sensor for D17A6 motor
Thanks Ezone! That helps to know the OEM ones are NTK's (I got the car used so I didn't know if the AFR was original or not and didn't see a brand on it) .
On NGK's website they list part # 24665 as the correct AFR, #24422 for the mid narrowband, and #24423 as the back narrowband.
According to the note, it sounds like I need to replace all 3 current ones and go with the 3 NTK's. My current AFR is a Denso and I don't know what my other 2 narrowbands are.
Thanks again.

I did not say that.
I said the 2 rear sensors I just put in a HYBRID were NTK.
I have NO way of knowing what brands were original to YOUR car without actually ordering them and seeing what comes in the package.
The note said nothing about the first sensor at all.
The first sensor can be replaced by itself.
The middle and rear sensors are to be replaced as a set.
Re: Correct AFR sensor for D17A6 motor
LOL! Fair enough. I made some assumptions. So let me ask you a couple more questions if you don't mind.
In your experience, when you have replaced the AFR and the O2/s on the same vehicle with the factory parts, have you noticed if the parts were the same brand or not?
In your experience, have the factory AFR and O2 parts for the D17aX engine been predominately NTK brand or have you seen other brands i.e. Denso, Bosch, etc.?
Sorry for all of the questions but you seem to have a lot more experience in this area than I do.

I strongly protest when someone wants to cheap out and use anything else, but there are occasions where I see factory parts that have been reboxed and sold through discount parts stores. That's hit-and-miss though, the counter help rarely will look and tell you what you are getting.

I also deal with much newer cars than what you have, 7th gen Civics are getting rare for me to see these days. I honestly don't recall ever seeing an HX where I work either. There are actually some versions of several of the cars I have never seen in my area.
