01 Civic Lies
01 Civic Lies

I recently noticed my speedometer is about 10 mph fast, and probably has been since I bought the car a couple thousand miles ago as a second vehicle. At the same time it also occurred to me that the tach is also off by 1000 RPM.
I verified that the speedometer is off with two different garmins. I'm no master mechanic, but know my way around an engine well enough to know that way it doesn't sound like its idling at 2k and turning 4k at highway speeds (unless its just that quiet). Should I try swapping the cluster, or is there a better fix that others have had luck with?
On a slightly related note:
The only automatics that I've driven in the past 7 years have been rental cars when I've gone on short trips, so I'm not exactly sure how it should feel. The civic seems to shift much, much smoother than the 92 accord that I learned to drive in (14 years ago). Everything feels silky smooth and heavy acceleration results in a downshift and increase in speed, so I don't think the 4k rpm at highway speeds is a result of slipping. The car seems to drive well and I probably wouldn't have noticed anything wrong had I not been for the GPS today.

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Re: 01 Civic Lies
Here's a bunch of crap I thought of, you can try these before you go looking for a cluster....
1) Look at the sticker in the door jamb, find the original tire size.
Find the tire size that is on the car now.
Do they match?
Does the current overall tire diameter match the original tire diameter?
Post both if they don't match please.
2) Another check would be to use a scantool data list to see what the computer sees, as far as the engine RPM and vehicle speed.
Do the gauges read the same as what the computer says?
3) No, they aren't supposed to idle at 2k. It would try to bark tires every time you drop it into gear if it were.
Do both gauges go to zero when you first turn the key on, before starting the engine?
4) Read this thread, follow instructions to do the "gauge sweep test": https://www.civicforums.com/forums/3...ach-issue.html
5) Then try a "reboot" which is disconnect the battery and touch the cables together for like 10 minutes.
6) If all that fails.......Try another cluster?
