01 Civic Overheating Problem

01 EX Civic 198k miles.

Water pump at 100k and 160k with timing belts both times.

Drove 3 hours home and the temp gauge was going up and down as i drove down the road. So took it to the shop and put in a thermostat the next morning and flushed the rad out and added new coolant.
Drove the car 3 weeks and ran fine in the city and no overheating problems that I could tell.

This past weekend drove 2 hours to Atlanta and got caught up in traffic and it started to overheat a little at red lights. Drove it home 2 hours and stopped in my driveway and the temp gauge pegged in 30 seconds. Both the fans where running wide open in the driveway when I raised the hood.

I check the rad with the temp gun and top and bottom of rad is about the same temp.

Need some help? Its not even hot yet in Alabama and having this problem.

Thanks in advance. DEE

Is the radiator completely full when you open it up?

Do the radiator fans run when they should?

Both fans where running wide open in the driveway Sunday afternoon. And the temp gauge just kept rising.

Rad was at normal level monday morning.

providing your radiator is full and always has been full, it sounds like your coolant is not circulating properly, or you have alot of clogged passages in your radiator, or elsewhere in the system,

how is the level of the coolant in the overflow tank?

was your thermostat installed correctly? it cant just be put in any which way, there is a weep hole that must line up properly when you install the thermostat, did you make sure it lined up properly? and more importantly, did you use a HONDA OEM THERMOSTAT? and honda OEM coolant?
