transmission guys help
hello all new here i own a 2002 honda civic ex trans code bmxa, well the trans went out so versus 2000 + i figured why not rebuild it my self seeing how the kit was cheap and im a pretty good wrench so i rebuilt the trans, worked good for 2 days then it started doing the same thing it was before the rebuild after a few minutes driving it i lose all the gears shut it off wait for about 5 minutes drive for 2 minutes then no gears again please someone tell me its a sensor or some easy fix thanks
Re: transmission guys help
Did your kit have a new filter? Sounds like it's loosing pressure for some reason. How was the pump? Did you replace the convertor or use the same one?
Rebuilt mine too. +50k now. Seemed a little more cost effective for a kit and a convertor and some time to save at or more than 1500 bucks! Use the search on my username a look up my thread a couple summers ago, there was some pretty decent pressure check info in there....

When you tore it down, what did you find had failed?
Did you then figure out what caused that item to fail?
Really shouldn't just dive into a trans failure job without knowing exactly where you need concentrate your attention first.
Start at square one: Gotta diagnose the actual problem.
Gotta figure out what the most likely causes are-- before you tear it apart.
Suggest pressure testing first.
You will need a good service manual or dedicated trans manual that covers diagnosis, and a set of trans pressure gauges to start with.
Probably a triple gauge set.
Example:
burned up a clutch pack...
root cause?
Might be a broken spring inside the valve body.....Might be a cross leak... might be something else....
but the clutch debris clogged up many of the orifices and screens, causing other problems and many different symptoms.....
clutch material piled up in the bottom and blocked off the filter, starving the pump.....
cooler and converter are now filled with clutch debris, waiting to come back out and ruin your fresh trans job.
On a trans serv. manual:
Before I started with this Honda dealer, the shop I was in had a trans builder that used Transtar as first call for trans parts.
Transtar used to sell manuals, trans guy would order one along with the build kit to go with every new trans job he had not done before. Not sure if those covered diagnosis though. Ask them.
Ask them about kits to fix known problem areas too.
Sonnax was one company that had fixes for all sorts of known problems with all kinds of trannys.

I don't have the answer. You gotta find it yourself.
======================================
SOUNDS LIKE the filter screen may be full of debris. Usually the pump starts screaming as it starves of fluid and quits pumping when this happens.
Did it get a new T.C.?
Did the cooler get flushed thoroughly or replaced?
Debris will hide in every last nook and cranny.
===================================
NOTE: In this dealer I work at, we do not rebuild Hondas automatics. The policy is to replace with reman unit only.

clutch material piled up in the bottom and blocked off the filter, starving the pump.....
That was the main culprit on mine. The mesh is so fine it clogged up without the pile up on the bottom. The 2nd clutches had known probs on these, the convertor clutches too on the early ones especially. BOTH make debris that plugs the filter, reducing pressure, furthering the problems. The 2nd clutch was showing heat on mine. I rolled one of the 3 shaft seals that is on the mainshaft when I put it together first, that one caused a p0740 though (it was the center one) the code is for a less than desired TCC output. A flush of the cooler is an absolute must on any transmission job. Doesn't matter if there is debris or not... A/C flush is good for that, it isn't too expensive and it evaporates easily. Aside from the convertor clutch problems, even if it didn't fail the convertor is a harbor of debris. They are a always replace too in my book. Mine was ~$150, most are 2-300 at most unless it is higher performing..... Cheap insurance when there is so much labor to get back to it. Not only that mine had 142k on it, a little bit for a convertor spent over that many miles and years is cheap IMO.

Re: transmission guys help
first off thanks for the quick replys, yes i replaced the filter, never did find any thing broke, clutches and steels looked good to me (of course im not a transmission guy),i took it to a shop an the man told me it just needed seals so thats what it got, guess i should have bought the master rebuild kit for $119 instead i just bought the soft kit for 40, no new convertor ,i do have a book but it dont say much about the pump ill bet it has something to do with the pump,i guess my biggest question is how can it worked for two days an then do the same thing,i feel im a good enough wrench to fix this issue ,or at least i think i em
Re: transmission guys help
Any wrench can fix stuff, diagnostics is where its at. If you are loosing everything it is likely that you are loosing pressure. Can't say why it ran and didn't without looking at it honestly. Does your book have any pressure charts? That is where I would start. Otherwise you are just taking blind stabs. Ya as far as soft or master def master, but hindsight is 20/20...
Re: transmission guys help
thx im sure i didnt do a good ill be the first to admit that, when u got the wife breathing down ur neck every hour its hard to stay focused, but i will try it again but this time everything will be new, convertor an all, i will check back in when i get to it this weekend,i really need a good manual i cant seem to find the book for the bmxa code anyone know where i can get one?

Re: transmission guys help
I've heard nothing but good things about synchrotech transmissions
They refurb trannies to factory specs and do some high performance work.
I priced out a "new" transmission from them, and it was gonna run me $886.14 shipped.. Assuming you call them to schedule a pick up of your old transmission, as well, for core charge purposes.
Comparing shipping between my current Vegas address and my old upstate NY address, there's only a $30 difference in shipping cost.
