Should I repair my 2001 EX?

During a recall repair service, the Honda dealership recommended I take care of some repairs, and I confirmed the importance of these with my local Honda shop. Here is a list of repairs, plus their estimated costs I was quoted by my local shop --

1) replace front break pads = $180
2) service timing belt, water pump, and seal = $800
3) repair broken bushings = $530
4) mystery spark plug issue (causes engine light to come on occasionally) = ? (undiagnosed as of now)
TOTAL = at least $1510

Kelly BB value for my car ('good' condition) is just under $4000 for private party resale.

We're not really driving this car much at the moment, maybe 30 miles a week, and it has just over 100,00 miles currently.

We have been talking about buying a new car but have been kind of procrastinating, though this recent potential large repair has gotten me thinking about it again. To me it doesn't seem worth repairing if we're going to sell it.

What are your guys' thoughts, repair, or sell as-is? Thanks in advance!

Do the work yourself. Do you have a car payment? If you don't, then if you divide that $1500 repair over a year, that's only $125 a month. That's lower then any car payment on a decent car. Just a thought. If your selling it then it may not be worth the investment but with it needing work it will lower the value.

Like Golnat said, it's a few car payments. Say you buy a descent new car, the payments maybe $500 a month for 5 years ($30,000). So basically the repair cost is three car payments and it may last you another five or ten years.

Just a thought.

I agree with the above.

And just so you know, timing belt, brakes, and spark plugs are MAINTENANCE (Your next car will eventually need them as well). They are NOT repairs.

Also if you have the ability those parts yourself will be 2 to 300 bucks depending what and where you get them. I agree though maintenance items are on every single car you have, not only that 100k is pocket change now days. Most cars that come off the assembly lines are a million times better than they used to be. 20 years ago 100k was alot on any car. Now days it is common for anything to go a couple hundred thousand.....

Thanks for all the input guys. Another reason for considering getting rid of the car is we've been thinking about upgrading for a while now.
