2004 civic wont go into gear.
Hey guys,
My parents live about 7 hours from me so I don't have a way to work on the car but I wanted to see if this is a common problem or if anyone has any input on this. I guess the shifter will move but wont go into any gear ( 5 speed manual). My dad sent me this video but I am not familiar with this car at all so I am not sure what is wrong.

Flipping the one lever with your finger tells me nothing...For all I know, that could all be the neutral part of the H pattern.
Is it still connected to the shift lever inside the car, or not?
Make and post a different video: Have someone inside the car, work the shift lever through each gear while watching the linkages in the engine compartment as before (make sure BOTH sets can be seen in the video). Yell out which gear you put it in so we can see if the linkages are where they should be (if that's even possible).
If only one of the cables moves, you have a shifter and/or cable problem. Pull off the center console and start digging for the reason.
If both of the levers on the trans move through their full range of motion but the trans still can't engage a gear, then you have a trans problem.
Or they toasted the clutch and that's why it won't move.
My GUESS: You aren't going to fix it from 7 hours away, and they apparently aren't going to fix it by themselves either.
Suggest they tow it to a reputable shop.

Ok I will ask my dad to get another video. He did sent me this picture, is there a linkage that is supposed to be coming out of that tube where it hooks up to the shift cable?

That tube, and the little cap he is holding in his fingers, is only a vent for the gearbox.
Put it back on there, it keeps dirt out.
