Rod Knock?

I don't think its rod knock. Sounds more like the valves need adjusting or the exhaust manifold is leaking.

I was thinking....(dangerous, I know) I DID try to listen on a couple of 7th gen cars after this conversation, and what I heard on those was similar to piston slap (diminishes as the pistons heat up) and possibly some carbon buildup noise probably from crummy gas.

Interesting. Every so often, I do get the chance to hear another similar spec and generation Civic, and most make similar sounds. I also suspect it may be the need for a valve lash adjustment. I'm not sure it's piston slap as the car, at start up, is very quiet, and there is no noticeable change in the sound of the engine once it warms up.
