'03 Honda Civic LX Engine Knocking?
'03 Honda Civic LX Engine Knocking?
You can hear it knock when you first turn the engine on, as you rev the engine it knocks louder and more frequently. It is still drivable, we drove it to the store earlier today. Around 2k-4krmp it knocks really bad, we are already aware out tranny is going out (might be going out slipping, what have you) it hits about 45 and doesn't want to shift to the next gear, lags a bit than shifts. It's an automatic 03 Honda civic LX, 107k miles. Had the engine board out back in novemeber/early december. It seized and didn't want to start.
What is this? We are both kinda car stupid and wanted some opinions before we went and wasted hundreds of dollars for no reason. ;[

Stick a fork in it, it is done.
That sounds to me like a rod knock (please get a second opinion from a live person that knows what they are doing!), that means you will need another engine.
You can isolate it to a single cylinder by disconnecting each coil one at a time, and rev it up again, see which one made the most difference in the sound of the knock.
Then junk it.
The engines are cheap, I would not bother fixing this one, I'd just drop another used engine in it with fresh timing components.
Same with the trans (probably), low miles from a wrecking yard with a guarantee.
Here you say "Had the engine board out back in novemeber/early december. It seized and didn't want to start."
Should I assume this engine has been severely neglected or abused in order to have something this dramatic happen? (yes)
Didn't the reputable shop that did the unusual repair give you a warranty on their workmanship? It has been less than 6 months since it was done.

Also, not trying to sound like an ***, but you need to learn what caused the engine failure, and correct YOUR behavior problem that caused it. (Check the oil level every time you get gas, change oil more frequently, etc.)
There is a tax on neglecting your machinery, and you are paying it.

Neglect of the oil is the usual root cause of an engine failure like that I heard on your video. Even if this failure is related to the engine rebuild 5 months ago, I can bet that neglect was the root cause of that failure too.
Denying ownership and responsibility doesn't solve the problem.
Sounds to me like you (the O.P.) are part of the "we" in the original post:
and that means you are probably at least a part time driver of the car, and therefore about 50% responsible for both upkeep and/or neglect.
Yeah, I assume a lot.
I have to at times, until something can be proven otherwise.
It's part of my nature, it's part of my job.
You haven't denied the charge of neglect, no matter who is at fault.
I'd guess a minimum of $2000 to drop in a used engine and transmission. Probably more like 3 or 4k. Lots of variables.
Anyone can check the oil, but (apparently) nobody bothered to check it.
If everyone keeps neglecting the oil, then someone is going to keep buying engines, no matter if it is in this car or the next car. That's the tax.
Reminds me of a story....http://answers.yahoo.com/question/in...1212550AAhwsKF
I take care of an awful lot of cars that aren't mine...but I can only do so much. The owners have to be responsible and do their part too.

Anyways, the car still... runs. We are in the process of now looking for a new car because 1. We don't have the money to keep fixing this one. 2. We need a new car.
About how long can we drive this one till we can junk it? :/

LOL: Drive it to the wrecking yard while it still can.
You get more coins for a car that will still move under its own power.
Or put it on Craigslist. As is.
Don't hope for much.
Running at all is worth more than DOA.
From the sound of the video, I'd guess you can only drive until the engine ventilates itself and pukes internal parts all over the road. (Sometimes called "hatching".)
Then you had better have on your walking shoes, or your hitchhiking thumb will get some exercise....
It won't heal itself. Bearing problems normally get worse in a hurry.
