01 Civic Manual. Clutch issues. Looking for advice and
I recently purchased this Civic, 01. It's a 5 speed. The story behind it is that the nimrod that owned it 2 people ago lowered with softer springs but not struts and this resulted in engine breakage.
The people I bought it from replaced the engine, the mount, the water pump, the clutch, the flywheel, and the air intake. I bought it 3 weeks ago and this noise has come from hardly noticeable to very loud since then. It's the story you've heard plenty of times. Idle in neutral with clutch let out: Rattle/knocking noise. Press clutch in: it goes away. It also makes a similar odd noise in 1st and 2nd.
This next symptom might be my imagination, but it seems like the clutch was at the top when I bought it, and now is in the lower half (How far I have to press clutch in to change gears) but it's only been three weeks. I don't ride the clutch.
UPDATE EDIT: Took a look at it with mechanic friends. Sound is coming from rear of tranny. Might just drive it till it dies and then replace tranny. Any cheap ones out there?
My request: What could this be, and how should I go about fixing it?
I've heard throwout bearing, pressure plate, clutch adjustment, input shaft bearing etc. Which of these is it most likely? Also, I don't have a billion dollars to go throwing at every possibility. Thank you very much in advance.

My clutch position moved like you said yours is and I needed to get a new slave cylinder. Are you loosing hydraulic pressure in the clutch pedal? Does it feel softer or not come up on its own?

That being said, I'm collecting potential problems for when I take it in for a full diagnostics test today or tomorrow, and I'm going to ask them to check the certain areas.

The rattling sound that you hear could be your throw out bearing which should have been changed when the clutch was done. A friend of mine had that same rattleing sound and he replaced the throw out bearing and it fixed the problem. Having a shop look at it would probably be best unless you feel comfortable changing the parts yourself.

I believe the input shaft bearing usually makes a grinding noise where the throw out bearing is a rattleing sound. I have read that if it makes a sound when you release the pedal it could be the input shaft bearing. Also if it makes the rattling sound in neutral with the clutch out then it's most likely the throw out bearing.

I recently had the same kind of issue/noise problem. When I dropped the trans, I noticed the throwout bearing was dry. I had the transmission shop take a look just in case, and the input shaft bearing was toast. I spun it by hand after the put in the new one, and god was it loud. One thing I noticed is when I popped the hood, put it in neutral, and have someone play with the clutch, you'd hear the grinding slow down. If it doesn't continue grinding in all gears, I would think it's a different bearing, but it's still an internal bearing to me.
If you have a couple jacks, some time, the will to drop the sub-frame, and to monkey around with everything, go for pulling it yourself. I did, but I also am unemployed right now (so I don't have a time frame to get things done by). Just remember it won't be cheap for a shop to check it out, at all.
Far as the position on the clutch, I'd take a look at the level and see where it is. Mine has been doing that off and on, and I just top off the fluid level. That seems to work. I think I have a leak, but I'm okay with topping off the fluid until I get the funds to fix that. Might be a leak, might be a bad cylinder. Just take a look

Noise when pedal in = throw out bearing
Noise when pedal out = input-shaft bearing
I think it's an input-shaft bearing, it will get louder and louder over time and eventually will start a more grinding kind of noise.

Right. However, I have heard the throwout bearing make a noise with clutch engaged, and not when disengaged (rare, but happens). Question to you: the throwout bearing would kind of "spool down" when disengaging the clutch right? That's the sound I had, and that's where I assumed it was bad. I'd assume that the bearing would only spin for a short time, and it wouldn't make that noise for long after you disengage the clutch... right? Just trying to clarify for future reference.

It's coming at the back of the tranny. and it stops immediately when I push in the clutch. Very sure it's ISB. Big problem is I don't have a couple of day's to just drop it, nor do I have the thousands + it'll take for the shop to do it
Re: 01 Civic Manual. Clutch issues. Looking for advice and
There have been people who have driven on bad ISB's for a long time, I've been driving on mine for a year now and it hasn't gotten any worse. If it was making a loud grinding noise I would be wary but it doesn't seem to be at this stage yet so I wouldn't worry about putting it off. Just turn up the radio and forget about it for now.
