Moonroof leaking?

2004 Civic EX 4dr. I was wondering if anyone has experienced leaking in their Civic. Whenever it rains, water leaks in. I've traced it down to the area just above the center console where the shifter is (i have a 5 speed). It drips out of the small bits and pieces attached to the headliner, like the plastic pieces where the visors clips/snaps in, and down part of the rear view mirror. Could it be the windshield or the sunroof?

Re: Moonroof leaking?

Most likely it's the sunroof gasket but, it could be the windshield gasket. Remove the headliner and spray the car with a hose to find the leak. If that doesn't work leave the headliner out until it rains again. If it is the moonroof gasket then you're halfway there with the headliner removed.

Re: Moonroof leaking?

thanks for the response. anyone have any suggestions as to how to remove the headliner. I'm not gonna lie, it looks like a bitch. Is there a DIY section on that? I don't even know where to begin because it looks like to remove the damn thing, I gotta snap half the interior trim off.

Re: Moonroof leaking?

1. Pop off the pillar covers
2. Remove the sun visors, clips, and overhead light(s)
3. At this point it should be completely loose. Remove the headliner from the car

Re: Moonroof leaking?

After you do what lazlong said. There is clips in the front and I beleive rear too. If you bend it a bit being careful not to break it you can see em they just pop right out.

Re: Moonroof leaking?

good news, it was the gasket at the top of the windshield not the moon roof. I just used some silicone sealant and it seems to be working well. Can't believe how much it was leaking. Almost like there was no gasket there at all...

Re: Moonroof leaking?

It's typical for rust to form under the windshield gasket, causing leaks. This is true for any vehicle.

Re: Moonroof leaking?

ya, there's rust there. Saw it when I lifted the rubber seal to check out the gasket. it's getting to the point where it's starting to make the paint bubble, so I'm gonna need to have it body worked soon. thanks again for the help.
