Whining Noise When Accelerating and in Neutral
Whining Noise When Accelerating and in Neutral
Hi
I just bought a 2004 Honda civic 1.6 sport as my first car but beginning to think should have done further testing before buying. When I took it for a test drive I could hear a whining noise when accelerating, the owner said it was the sound of the vtec, which I believed.
After buying it and takin it home I realised that accelerating hard have a really loud whine. Also when it's in neutral with clutch disengaged thered is a grinding noise, which goes away when I press clutch down.
I've searched the Internet and have found some people hav had similar problems. And concluded with the input shaft bearing. Will this problem lead to any serious consequences if I keep driving it? And how hard is it to replace the bearing myself? I haven't had any mechanical experience before.
Thanks

I've had it for 4 years now. That being said, it will go bad eventually. With no mechanical experience I would leave it to the professionals. Since they pretty much have to take the whole thing apart to fix the bearing you might as well have the whole thing rebuilt. You're looking at $1200-1500 minimum to repair, sorry.
I have the OEM version of weight reduction. DX

Wow, 2004 1.6? The 7thgen civics are 1.7L engines. and IIRC, the sport does not have vtec. I wouldn't know what the issue is, but it doesn't sound like it could be good. I would bring it to a reputable garage, and have them take a look at it.
Re: Whining Noise When Accelerating and in Neutral
I'm not sure what gen it is and whether it's the same in Uk and US. It's the ep2 hatchback model, not sedan. A friend told me it would only cost about £150 labour, I don't want to replace the whole transmission, the bearing itself is about £20 from Honda.

Re: Whining Noise When Accelerating and in Neutral
if it really is a 1.6L, the vtec does have a noticable whine to it at certain rpms. if its really loud tho it could be trans or timing belt tensioner related.
Re: Whining Noise When Accelerating and in Neutral
Yeah the parts are cheap, there is a lot of work involved though. Prob should have the clutch done too unless its newish. The transmission will have to be pulled and taken apart to replace the bearing.
Re: Whining Noise When Accelerating and in Neutral
Input shaft bearing. I have the same problem on my S2000. I wouldnt worry to much about it unless it gets really loud. When its time to do the clutch make sure you change it as it wont cost much more to do at that point in time.
Re: Whining Noise When Accelerating and in Neutral
Yeah mine has been making noise for about 12k miles now and I'm not too worried, it's still at the point where it's barely noticeable.
I do plan on fixing it when I have to replace my clutch.
If it is very loud or a grinding noise I would be weary.

Re: Whining Noise When Accelerating and in Neutral
I just spent the last 3 days taking it apart, but I don't know how to get to the bearing. I hope someone has an idea. I'e read many guides and they tell you to remove a bolt to life out the shift forks and the gear sets but there is no bolt on mine. The shift forks seem to just go into the case??? Please help!!!

Re: Whining Noise When Accelerating and in Neutral
I've never been inside this transmission but I will say this.
#1 You need a Factory Service Manual!!! If you don't have one.
#2 If you proceed farther you need to label and bag all fasteners that you remove and take plenty of pictures!
I speak only from my experiences rebuilding a some manual transmissions.

For someone who doesn't have any mechanical experience, you definitely went to far....GET A SERVICE MANUAL...CHILTON, HAYNES, whatever you have over there...DON'T LET THOSE GEARS GET ANY DIRT ON THEM!!! SMH
Re: Whining Noise When Accelerating and in Neutral
I've been using haynes but that don't talk about the transmission, I've got a few questions:
1) What happens if I get dirt in it?
2) What if I accidentally move the synchros around?
3) Will the gears fall out if I pick up the shafts.
4) Any other tips for when disassembling or reassembling the transmission?
Please sound supportive as I'm on the edge of giving up at the moment and buying a new gearbox which I don't have money for. Spent 3 long days of hard labour to take apart the front of the car, I don't really want to stop what I have started...
Thanks

Also, they suggest cleaning the trans with a solvent. Is white spirit ok?
Re: Whining Noise When Accelerating and in Neutral
Is "white spirit" kerosene? If it is then no. Do not clean it with kerosene. Clean it with brake parts cleaner in the aerosol cans. Use the flammable stuff because it cleans better and leaves zero residue.

Haven't got any brake cleaner with me, how about wd40 then wipe away? It's mainly the enclosure area so I can apply new liquid gasket sealant.
Also I'm not sure if I bought a good gearbox oil, I called up Honda and they said I need any EP90 oil, and I looked online and saw that EP80W/90 is also suitable. So I bought that but its a mineral version, are there any disadvantages to using mineral rather than synthetic?

Re: Whining Noise When Accelerating and in Neutral
WD-40 will not work for a surface that needs to be sealed. The residue that it left behind will cause a leak. Use brake parts cleaner.
The EP80W/90 is the last thing you want to use in your tranny!!!
It's WAY TOO thick!!! Return it and buy 2 quarts of Honda MTF.

Thanks, I'm still waiting for some parts, sheared a bolt...
Should I be worried about little bits of dust on the gears? Can I just spray the gears with the brake cleaner and wipe it down?
I decided to return that cheap stuff and get Honda MTF 3.

Re: Whining Noise When Accelerating and in Neutral
jonnyl888 Could you please give a follow up, how are things after you replaced the ISB? Also, I believe you stated in another thread that the ISB doesn't make noise anymore but now you have a knocking noise. What's going on now with your civic because I'm about to fix the ISB myself with videos from Youtube and DIY's

you would be better off creating your own thread
