Transmisison Leak question, name that part
Transmisison Leak question, name that part
Oops mod please put in Mechanical...
Had a used transmission put in (less 75K miles) and now a few weeks later get this.
1. Could it be the result an overfill?
2. The leaking area looks like the m/t fill plug. But it doesn't look like the pictures in the DIY.
3. What part is that? Is there a gasket? Can I tighten it down some more?
Thanks!

Re: Transmisison Leak question, name that part
looks like you could just put a 1/2 drive ratchet in there and tighten it. or just get a new one from majestic and put that in. Looks like a manual, and thats where you fill it. if you take out the plug and put your finger in, you should touch the top of the oil line. If some flows out, its overfilled. filling it isnt too hard

No that isn't the fill or drain bolt, #14 and #9 are as you found on the diagram.
I'm pretty sure that's the bolt you have to remove in order to get access to the snap ring to pull the trans case apart.

That's what it looks like if you remove the bolt. Has the trans been rebuilt recently?
I'd make sure it was tight first. If it is I wouldn't see a problem with removing the bolt and putting some Honda bond on the threads, I'm not 100% sure though, maybe someone else can chime in. It's not a serious leak, nothing to worry about inside the tranny.
I don't think you'll lose any fluid by removing that bolt, it seems higher than the fill bolt.

looks like you just need a new plug bolt. chances are they reused the old one during the rebuild or it got loose and now it doesnt seal properly. maybe the rubber got deformed. try tightening it first.
Re: Transmisison Leak question, name that part
Thank you both for the replies. Looks like I'll tighten it and if that doesn't work I'll order a new one, only $4.50. Thanks anabis for the picture, now I know I can't mess up anything just by removing it.
I took a chance on used, not reman'ed transmission. First one with 63K miles was a dud b/c the reverse wouldn't work probably due to a car accident. Second one under warranty seems to be working fine.

Went out there tonight. Only had a large breaker bar that was 1/2inch and a 6in extension. Had to removed the tire but I got the Sealing Screw to turn 1/8 of a turn pretty easily. Dried everything up and put down some cardboard to see what tomorrow brings.
Re: Transmisison Leak question, name that part
I'm glad you got it fixed easily.
It is odd that you would have issues with that bolt being loose, it would seem to me that someone has been inside that trans before. This could be a good thing, maybe it's a recent rebuild and you won't have the ISB issue for another 100k.

That's what I'm hoping for! But this was purchased from the junkyard's national system. Maybe the PO had it rebuilt. I spoke too soon, still weeps a bit of oil. I'm going to order a new seal for $5 and use some Ultra Grey I have to finally nip it in the butt...
Re: Transmisison Leak question, name that part
Yeah, i used it to fill last time. Went in slow.
Torque spec is 18 ft-lbs. (I know I already posted it on your honda-tech thread but, posted it here for the benefit of the people here)
BTW: No where in the service manual does it say you have to mess with that snap ring to remove the tranny.

Well I took the front right tire off. Removed the sealing screw. Coated the threads with some Ultra Grey. Put back in at 18 ft-lbs. Looks great and everything went well. Thanks for every ones help!
