Start, run 2sec...stall - CKP voltage question

Checked fuel pressure, 43psi at key on and run. No fuel issue there.

Decided to pull Crank Position Sensor (CKP) connector. Car starts and runs perfectly! Plugged CKP connector back in and car runs 2 seconds...stall. Jumped to conclusion that CKP was bad and replaced it. Plugged CPS connector into new CKP and car runs 2 seconds...stall.

Measured voltage at CKP connector. Battery voltage on pins 2 & 3, 4.9 volts on pin 1 to ground. All good at connector.

Measured voltage at ECM pin 7 and see 4.9 volts until car is started, then it drops to 3.9 and engine stalls. After stall, voltage returns to 4.9.

I grabbed old CKP (not installed) and plugged CKP connector into it. car starts and runs perfectly! Measured voltage at ECM pin 7 and see 4.9 volts all the time.

I assume the voltage drop to 3.9 volts is causing ECM to stall engine. What is the fix? Would this be a ECM hardware issue (replace ECM) or software issue (flash ECM)?

Thanks!

Re: Start, run 2sec...stall - CKP voltage question

Forgot to mention: 2004 Civic 1.7 liter...no CEL, of course. CKP connector has been cleaned. It was corroded on BLUE wire lead (connection to ECM).

Anyone know what the voltage is supposed to be on a working CKP?

Re: Start, run 2sec...stall - CKP voltage question

pin1: about 5V
pin3: battery V
pin2 to pin3: battery voltage

If your getting about 5V at ECM pin-A7 then you have an open in that wire between the sensor and ECM. Make sure your making a good connection at both locations then look for a broken/burnt wire. I would especially look at that corrode connector. If you can't find anything then just run a new wire.

Re: Start, run 2sec...stall - CKP voltage question

Removed wires from harness connector using SnapOn tool. Blue wire is corroded passed the crimp area on the terminal pin.

Spent 1.5 hours at 2 dealerships looking for new terminal pins. Seems 2004 is too old! No part numbers, no kits, no nothing. Both dealers said that they save the old engine harnesses (when a customer pays for a new one) and cannibalize them when they need a connector

You can always get generic connectors, a crimper, and leads (all at radioshack). Then make your own connection.

Re: Start, run 2sec...stall - CKP voltage question

OK. All is clean, good connections to CKP, no more open circuit.
Back to the testing: Battery voltage on pins 2 & 3, 5 volts on pin 1 to ground

Step 10: Is there DTC P0335 or P0336....YES! (P0336)

Resolution: Update ECM software or replace ECM.

So, what are the chances that a software update will fix this issue? Software has not been updated since purchase in 2007. Has anyone ever had this issue repaired by software?

Thanks

Re: Start, run 2sec...stall - CKP voltage question

Found another pigtail that is in great condition (visit to junk yard), so spliced it into the harness. Car towed to dealer for new computer and key reprogramming. We'll see if it fixes the issue.

Re: Start, run 2sec...stall - CKP voltage question

Day 1 at dealership...testing in inconclusive, mechanic stumped.
Day 2...I go to dealer to discuss my testing with mechanic. Spend 1 hour reviewing my notes and results.
Day 3...dealer says that CKP has no pulse, is bad and needs to be replaced. I remind them that I purchased it from them last week and cost should be under warranty. They call me back a few hours later and say the timing belt is off by 2 teeth...and cam and crank seals are leaking!

Funny thing, I checked timing belt when I replaced CKP last week and it was perfect...so were the seals. Car has run beautifully for 10 months since timing belt was replaced...wife averages almost 38 mpg!

Re: Start, run 2sec...stall - CKP voltage question

We got the car back this morning and it runs...same as it did before it died (no better, no worse).

Dealer showed me a photo at 10,000x magnification (molecular level) of the seal...we have 100,000 miles left on it before it starts weeping oil.

Mechanic researched issue and said that computer turned off engine for self-defense protection because the cam and crank sensors were reporting an out-of-time issue. Disconnecting the CKP allowed the computer to run in limp mode since it was "blind" to crank timing.

I leave the conspiracy theory to others, but the car runs and it cost the exact amount that I was willing to spend on a new computer and key reprogramming ($650) and my wife is happy to get her car back.

Case closed.
