Can you trust Alldata diagnosis steps?

Help me out, mechanics...

Are the diag steps in Alldata generally correct?

Carefully following some steps to diagnose a problem with my air conditioner not working correctly, I'm now at a point where Alldata says to update the ECU with the latest software or replace the ECU. It seems very odd to need this make the AC work when it worked fine before.

After filling the system with freon, the compressor no longer runs unless it's hard wired. Could an ECU issue show up and prevent this from working properly?

Alldata info comes straight from the factory manuals. If it says update (re-flash) the ECM/PCM then I would have it updated at the dealer (only place to get it done).
