Oil Question
I did a search but I couldnt find my answer. I am tired of bringing the car to the dealer for an oil change and I do not like to change the oil myself. I asked the service guy at Honda and he told me the only oil that I can put in the 2001 civic is 5w20. Is this true? I would like to bring it somewhere else to have it done. I know the other places in the area use 10w30. Am I going to have a problem if I use this oil or does honda say you have to use this oil because they want the business. Whoe here uses other oil than the recommended 5w20? Also what oil are you using? Have you noticed any problems? Please someone answer my question.
Thanks.
Thanks.
In a sense, the Honda guy is right, cuz he's just following the instructions he gets from Honda. And you will notice in our manuals, and on our engine oil cover caps, it says to use 5w20 only. Whether or not it is better for our cars than 5w30 is up for debate, as Storm's link shows.
I've been letting my dealer do all my oil changes and they always use 5w20. No problems here. I wouldn't worry about something like this.
And if you really want to think about it some more, the difference in terms of protection of 5w20 vs. 5w30 must be so small that it really is non-issue, unless you plan on keeping your car for more than 10 years.

The 2001 manual does not say to use 5w20 only, it says that 5w30 may be used if 5w20 is unavailable, but to change back the 5w20 at the next oil change.

I have been getting my oil changes at the dealer that I bought it from, but I am not sure what they are using. They say it is Gulf oil. Does Gulf make a 5w20? I am doubtful whether Honda central is really sure of what their dealerships are really doing.

Agreed. But I am concerned now about the importance of the 'break in oil' that MUST NOT be changed for the first 5,000 miles (8,000 kilometers), even though this warning is practically in small print in the owners' manual.
Why is your dealer using Gulf oil? Not even sure if they make 5w20.
Honda should have their own brand of 5w20 (which they told me was supplied to them by Quaker state). And this is what my dealer uses.

Then again, if 5w20 was gonna mess up the engines (and I'm sure honda knows that people plan on racing their civics), would they recommend it? THEY are the ones that pay for the warrenty work.......

I know they are not using Honda brand oil, the windshield sticker says they use Gulf oil, when I asked them what brand they used I thought it might have been Castrol or Penzoil, I'm not positive, because I was just thinking that I was surprised it wasn't Honda oil.
Does Honda corporate do spot checks of its dealers to see what their practices are?
well i asked the question to the salesman who sold me the car at the dealer and you guys might surprised what he told me....PETROL CANADA OIL.....he said the dealer buy in bulk and they are one of those reuseable one...i was freaked out when i heard this....but i looked around for 5W20 oil by Castrol or Mobil 1 and it costs like $6 CDN for 1 litre. the dealer charged me $35 CDN per oil change. so i have no choice but go to the dealer and use the PETROL CANADA OIL in my car
but this might not be the accurate answers as i am thinking the salesman is JOKING with me

What does the 5w-20 mean. I bought 15W-50, it says its the performance driving formula. Its made by Mobil, thats what my dealer uses. Will anything bad happen if I put it in my car??
