2002 Civic ex Sedan Mileage Issue
2002 Civic ex Sedan Mileage Issue
hey guys so i have a 2002 civic ex sedan with 93k miles and i basically fill up on gas weekly only running 250 mpg/ 400kmpg. i dont know whats wrong i change the oil every 3000 miles, changed the spark plugs, air filters, check the air pressure on tires, battery's brand new but yet my gas mileage sucks somebody help please and thanks
Re: 2002 Civic ex Sedan Mileage Issue
How much fuel is it taking when you fill it up?
The only way to know MPG for sure is to fill it up and reset your tip (or write down mileage), drive it until 1/4 tank, fill it up again at the same pump and same station, write down how much fuel it takes and how many miles you drove. Divide mileage by how many gallons it took. IE 250 miles divided by 11 gallons = 22.2 MPG.
It could be the gauge is being funny. Our tanks hold 13.2 gallons but will rarely take more than 12 when the gas light first comes on.

Re: 2002 Civic ex Sedan Mileage Issue
That's because there's still 2-3 gallons left when that light comes on. I once had to go 83 miles after the gas light came thus proving there's at least 2 gallons in there when the light comes on.

anibis=when i fill up it takes like almost 11 gallons and i reset my trip log every time i fill up so that i know how much more i can run without running out and ok ill do that and let you know how much the mpg is
lazlong=yea i have noticed that the more u drive with the little picture the more gas ull need and i can run for like 40 miles lol

the best is citco, next best is chevron, then exxon/mobil. shell and most of the others are distant last.

Cold weather/cold starts/and warming up the engine, kills gas mileage.
Any time the engine is running and you are not moving, kills gas mileage.
Winter fuel blends get less mileage.
Alcohol/Ethanol fuel gets less mileage.
Low pressure in the tires kills gas mileage. Tire pressure drops when the weather gets cold.
Other car problems can kill gas mileage. (Dragging brakes, runs poorly, check engine light, etc.)
Teenage driving habits kills gas mileage (don't ask). Drive like a grandma.
Read about hypermilers. See how they do it.

gearbox=ok thanks
ezone=i try to avoid letting it warm up unless theres frost then yea,my tires are good, and everything is good (new battery, new spark plugs, new brakes and etc) and ive tried driving like a grandma lol and it still eats gas

Try resetting the ECM/PCM then do the idle re-learn. You'll have pretty bad mileage until it gets enough data for a decent fuel trim but, should get better after that.
Also, have you checked it for codes?

25 MPG isn't too far off the mark. As always, your mileage may vary.

Re: 2002 Civic ex Sedan Mileage Issue
Check for stored codes, if an 02 sensor is gone then that could account for the lower mileage.
I average 38-40mpg with summer fuel and on winter blends 35-38mpg with a 60/40 mix of highway to city driving. Not driving like a grandma, but also not overly aggressive.

Lazlong=ok ill do that relearn and see if it works,
Ezone= I know but everyone gets like 300+ miles per full tank wherr I only get 250 at max
Mindbomber=i cant search for codes cuz I dont have a machine or anything

Re: 2002 Civic ex Sedan Mileage Issue
@mindBomber. Wow thats really good. I get around 8.3L/100km about 28mpg. with 70/30 city/highway. The highest I ever got was 700km to the tank with 95% highway doing about 120km/hr
I remember gearbox said something about changing the primary O2 sensor for better fuel/air ratio. I think mine are running originals at 200K KM. My tires and air filters are always checked.I did my sparks last December along with a tranny fluid change. I don't know you guys get such amazing gas mileage. I drive conservatively and let off the gas way ahead of where i need to stop. The areas of my driving which I kill my gas are on the on ramps to an highway. With no tq you really gotta press down on these civics. I put in a bottle of techron fuel system cleaner that you guys get in the US and I have noticed an improvement in throttle response. Now when i press down, the car actually moves! Not sure about gas mileage. Ill have to see after this tank is done.

Yeah some people say the fuel injection cleaners are junk but they actually do work. The first time I ever used it in my '93 Mustang (bought it used) I got about a 20% bump in MPG, also had a friend get a similar bump in his Toyota Celica. Neither car had never been treated with FI cleaner before.
If you have never used a FI cleaner in the car it may help a great deal.

Re: 2002 Civic ex Sedan Mileage Issue
winter does a number on gas mileage. there are so many variables working against you that a 10mpg drop is pretty normal compared to summer. these cars were not designed to run optimally in cold weather.
Re: 2002 Civic ex Sedan Mileage Issue
Easy on the gas, and remove all the **** you dont need in your car. Sounds like you properly maintain the car, so maybe your driving habbit is to blame?
Re: 2002 Civic ex Sedan Mileage Issue
Gunner=no the check engine light is not on
Anibis=ill try the fuel injection cleaner see if that works I hope it does
Gearbox=in the summer I have the same issue it doesnt reach 300
04 honda civic=i dont have anythint in my car but my jack, case of water and pillow lol

Re: 2002 Civic ex Sedan Mileage Issue
hey guys so the problems back ive only been using quik chek and sunoco gas stations and still the gas is getting eaten up like today i filled up and the little gas empty signal was on for a while and i only ran 290 miles in about 9 days. im getting really fed up of spending 40 dollars every week for gas. if this continues i may have to sell this car and get a more fuel efficient one :/ any suggestions as to what else i can do ?
