Loud "clunk" noise

I was doin about 40mph in 3rd and shifted back to second and I let off the clutch hard. When i did I heard this loud thud like noise from under the front end. So I tried it a few more times and it still does it. any ideas? i drive kinda hard and every thing else feels ok. Just when I down shift at a high RPM to a higher rpm at a lower gear. When I take off and bang gears it dont do it...Only when I down shift and dump the clutch? What the hell is this?

If you let off the clutch hard, it might be the banging of the clutch plate. Does it happen when you shift to higher gear too?

It's your engine trying to catch up.
at 40 mph in third gear, you're probably near the low-middle end of the RPM range
If you keep the same speed, but drop a gear, your engine all of a sudden has to play catch up and rev itself a couple thousand RPMs faster. Unless you get your RPMs to the right point by giving it gas while the clutch is disengaged, your engine will have trouble going faster. Normally your engine is pushing the wheels; when you do this you are forcing the wheels to push the engine.
