01 Honda Civic LX, Code P1361 with a twist
01 Honda Civic LX, Code P1361 with a twist
My son's 01 LX has had a problem where when the vehicle gets hot it looses 90% power. When it cools down all is fine. The first codes it displayed were low catalytic efficiency. When the car powers down the catalytic convertor glowed bright red. It is a front mount convertor so I replaced it along with both O2 sensors.
Unfortunately this did not fix the issue. An hour after the replacement, the engine "shuddered", CEL came on and the car powered down. We tried to limp home in a very hilly neighborhood and the car overheated before we made it back.
An hour later I rescued it and it ran fine. Radiator was very low so I filled it ad drove it pretty hard (lot of hills with AC on). The car ran fine and stayed cool. I went to AZ and had the code read, P1361, intermittent TDC sensor. I did a lot of reading here and read the TSB on the crankshaft play. My VIN does not fall under the ones listed. When I got home I saw water dripping an noticed that the coolant reservoir was spraying water out of thee fill cap.
We have been chasing this for a while. While waiting on the convertor we received and reset several low catalytic efficiency codes. We had never seen the P1361. Also, the overheating in the radiator is new. The electric fan is running.
If anyone can point me in a good direction it will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Water seems to be circulating fine and I do not have any other head gasket symptoms. I was hoping the overheating was caused by trying to force the car up some big hills after it went into "safe" mode.
I was thinking if I fixed the TDC problem, overheating would go away.

If your coolant overflow is overfilling I'm 99% sure it's your headgasket.. However, click the link in my signature if you want to know more information on it.

TDC sensor is the camshaft sensor, not the crankshaft sensor.
-Turn ignition OFF
-Disconnect the sensor
-Turn ignition ON
-Measure for voltage from the yellow/black wire to body ground
Do you have battery voltage?

TDC most likely has nothing to do with your overheating problem. Although it could lead to other serious issues you should fix it before permenantly damaging your catalytic converter or engine. You want that sensor functioning correctly.

Car no longer over heats but is loosing coolant. Block test was good news, no blown head gasket. I will check voltage to TDC sensor and replace the sensor if power is correct.

Radiator had a leak. Replaced radiator, thermostat and cap, along with all hoses. No longer overheats. Still getting low catalytic efficiency after replacing cat and o2 sensors.
TDC sensor was also replaced and camshaft did not have excessive play

Did the radiator on Saturday. We are watching closely. After reading some of your threads I did suspect the HG, but engine block test was clean. Crossing fingers

From the 7th gen Civic service manual. I am having the P1361 issue and am bringing it in tomorrow to get it diagnosed. I hope the mechanic has a passion for this issue like I do being I sought out this technical info from the service manual.
