Re: 2004 honda civic- Vtec

In the states it would be an EX.

Vtec kicking in doesn't make any noise other than a change in engine pitch, that sounds like when you open the door with the keys in the ignition, weird.

I hear it now.

Does it happen in every gear at that rpm range?

Not every gear, usually the high gears like 1 and 2, its not near as bad at 3 4 and 5.
andd... it doesnt happen ALL the time, but it usually does it, at gear 2 and 3 its not nearly as loud also.

You are talking about that extra whirring sound to the engine, right?

Re: 2004 honda civic- Vtec

100% positive it's the tranny. I know because mine has made the same exact noise in 1st and 2nd for 3 years. If it doesn't bother you it'll be fine for years.

Re: 2004 honda civic- Vtec

Yeah, it's probably bearings. I would wait until it breaks 'cause tranny work is expensive. Several options:

1. Have the trans rebuilt by a shop- $1500-2000

2. Pull it yourself and have the shop rebuild it- $1000 or less

3. Rebuild it yourself- your time and labor (it will take days if you haven't done it before) plus parts.

Rebuilding a manual trans isn't horribly hard, it's just intensive. There's several DIYs on this forum and Honda-tech.com as well as several videos on Youtube.
