when you wash the car, wash the engine. I used the armor all protective wipes on anything that is plastic or rubber under the hood. Also get a spray on degreeser, and spray the car down before you use the armor all. Make sure it is dry. Also a shop vac is good to get dirt out of the hard to reach places.

So is it safe to just take a garden hose to the engine? I was afraid water might get into something it wasn't supposed to. Of course I know not to spray water into the intake, but don't know much about the rest of the motor like electrical, wires, alternator (the coil is pretty exposed), etc. Is it safe to like power wash it?
I have mud, dirt, chunks of salt in there, you name it! I got it! This is a very crappy design if you ask me. I can almost stick my whole hand right under the front of the hood when it's closed! Why couldn't they put a little rubber molding there, right in the middle front of the hood? It's wide open to road debris.

i just spray mine with a hose and wipe down with soap and sponge once a month, it's perfectly safe, better to let the engine cool first, and let engine compartment airdry after with hood open. i've used pressure washer on the engine once, it works fine, but be careful not to spray too close tho.

I actually did that about a month ago but only put the water directly on the heat shield that covers the header because there were huge deposits of road salt there (from the NY/NJ roads I guess) the size of my fist! Then I sprayed the top of the tranny a little that was filthy but I was being careful not to get water on the alternator and other electrical components as certain parts didn't seem totally insulated.. Then I took an old mechanic's rag I have, and started wiping the water down in certain sections where I had sprayed with the hose. I ended up cutting my finger on something and bleeding all over in there so now I have blood stains in there along with all the other crap Some sections were hard to reach. I 'm surprised this motor even runs with so much dirt and mud on it. I only drive on paved roads and they 're main highway roads at that so i was surprised to see all that dirt on the motor. Some of it is light brown dry mud. Have no clue where it came from. I guess you pick up all kinds of stuff from the road. I have not experienced such a dirty engine compartement with any of my cars and I have onwed over 15 cars, 7 of them new including a '97 Civic which was pretty clean under the hood for the first 2-3yrs. My '99 Integra's motor looks like brand new compared to my '01 Civic which is 3yrs newer but looks like it's 10yrs old and has been through hell and back.. Honda has me really puzzled lately. How much you want to bet they didn't plan for this or didn't intend to allow that much dirt into the engine compartment. Maybe that 's why my alternator started making all those noises and finally died. Some road debris must 've hit it or got inside it. This could be part of the reason people are having so many problems with them.

the safest bet is to cover all electrical pieces on the engine with plastic, if you want to do it yourself. One of the best things I've found is getting your engine detailed by a pro. After each winter (once per year) spend some money and they make it look better than new. During the summer, just wipe down parts which might get a littlbe bit dirty, otherwise it will look nice and clean till winter rolls in again.

i wash my motor every other time i wash the car. witch is every week. of course cover the intake if u have one. use any kind of multy perpose or degreaser, spray everywhere IT WONT HURT IT. then hose it all out. you can spry EVERYTHING down. the only thing that use to be a worry is the distrubutor and we don't have one. then use tire foam. it gets everywhere u can't. i'v been doing this sence 2/01 on mine and i also use to own a detail shop for 2 years so i know what i'm talking about. mine it still looks like brand new. everytime i get the oil changed the hole shop has to come over and look at it. ........as far as the abs block use mothers crome polish on it.

You actually NEED to do this. It's possible to crack a block from the extreme heat differences and rapid cooling from the cold water. At the very least you will get some warping as the outside of the engine cools quicker than the inside (also why you shouldn't run pans under water after cooking with them)
