The tire shop cross threaded my stud!

Found another issue with having people work on the whip! I'm currently switching to my steelies for the winter (easy enough task). I couldn't sleep so I did what any sane person would do and I snuck into the garage to wrench I loosened my lugs and jacked up the front passenger wheel but noticed when I jacked it up only three of the four could be loosened by hand. Thinking I had forgotten to fully loosen the lugs I reached for my 19mm socket and loosened but it struggled to me removed. I removed the lug but knew that the tire shop had screwed my stud up so I grabbed an extra lug and tried to re-thread the stud but to no avail!
Anyone changed the wheel stud before? I searched and some say I just need to remove the disk and hammer out the stud and replace while others say I have to pull the axle. The parts are pretty cheap and I know this can be done for $5 or less but I just would like to know which method works/works best (easiest preferred).

Re: The tire shop cross threaded my stud!

You have to remove the wheel hub to access the studs.

Cool man. Just purchased all the parts for the fix.

Wheel Stud $1.99 Autozone
Open End Lug Nut FREE Firestone
2 #12 Washers DONATED Home Depot

Pretty inexpensive fix but I'm curious how long the labor will take. Will post when finished. I'll attempt this after I get off work tomorrow A.M.

Update... pulled off caliper & disc but the hub is a pain! Just picked up a loaner tool (slide hammer) from Autozone which should make the hub submit. Looks like this project is delayed until I get off work tomorrow *grr*

Re: The tire shop cross threaded my stud!

welcome to the club...
Mine were stuck in the stud for a year because the shop did not want to take responsibility... Had another shop drill nut and stud out - took 2 days...

Re: The tire shop cross threaded my stud!

sounds like a nightmare! I figured they wouldn't own up to the mistake so I figure I'd eat the $2 and make sure it gets done correctly. Ya dig...

There is a way to no take the hub off. You have to hammer the first one out with the hub on then you grind one side of the new stud flat and it will barely squeeze past the dust cover or whatever is there and go into the hole.

It's kinda hard to describe without showing a pic or something. But I have done it a couple times before.

Re: The tire shop cross threaded my stud!

Really? I was trying to verify this with a DIY I saw and noticed that it's for an 2000 civic! I didn't try and pull the hub off yet but from looking at it I fully agree with you that it doesn't come off (atleast doesn't appear to come off easily). I don't have access to a grinder though! I have a big file but that is all I have. Anyone done this before? I searched the issue and found a DIY but like I said before I just now noticed it's for a 2000. I've replaced studs on other cars before and it was pretty straightforward but this is the first time I'm attempting it on my 03.

I am not sure if it will work with yours. I just know that I have done it before on my old 97 civic and my 89 Bronco.

Re: The tire shop cross threaded my stud!

The champ is here...haha! It was a long fought battle but on this day I conquered a beast of an opponent I took a few pics but not neccessarily a step by step. The key is to have the proper tools. An impact gun helped but with hand tools it's easily possible. The key to hub removal is a slide hammer (autozone loaner tool #27033) & an axle puller (autozone loaner tool #27037). To remove the axle nut you'll need a 32mm socket.

I have done this as well, to my 01 civic. I had to re-tap the threads after I got them in. I was in a time pinch and it worked, if you can get a hub puller or slide hammer use that of course.

Re: The tire shop cross threaded my stud!

brake assembly

17mm bolts (x2) holding brake caliper

12mm bolt securing brake line

pic shows stripped wheel stud and hub (note that the axle nut is still in the pic. The nut is 32mm and needs to be removed before you attempt to remove the hub)

slide hammer AZ tool #27033 (right) & axle puller AZ tool #27037 (left)

Re: The tire shop cross threaded my stud!

CGaud-When you used the axle puller, did the hub easily separate from the other parts? It started sliding off the axle but would not separate from the parts that connect to the strut. I thought that the hub would separate from the bearing. Is that what is expected? Am I missing something?

Re: The tire shop cross threaded my stud!

You will start to see it pull away from the axle keep pulling until it fully disconnects. I am also assuming that you have removed the rotor and removed the two phillips head screws attaching the rotor to the hub. Looking back at this post I failed to show those pics. I hope this helps.

Re: The tire shop cross threaded my stud!

Yea I removed the rotor from the hub. Currently I have the hub and the knuckle (attaches the the strut) pulled from the axle. The hub would not separate from the the knuckle and the bearing. Just a little frustrated.
