New Honda owner/new to forums, first question

I recently purchased a 2002 Civic coupe. Love the car so far.
One thing I noticed in the past two days was after the car idles I get a loud whining noise when I turn the wheel or accelerate. It seems to be worse when I turn the wheel, the whining gets louder. I only really notice this around town and it seems to go away if I jump on the highway or drive for a while. I also heard a few popping noises as I was turning slowly through a drivethrough. It was at that same time that I heard the whining noise as well.
I am going to check the power steering fluid tomorrow morning, but was wondering if you guys have heard this sort of thing or can offer me any advice before I go find a mechanic.
Thanks

Check your fenderwell linings. If they're torn up, they'll sag and start to rub on your tires and make a whining sound that even makes me paranoid about what it is.

As for the popping noise, I got nothing. lol

Popping will be steering, suspension, or cv joints
