2004 Civic engine removal
Hello all,
Searched the forum with various "engine removal" key words - nothing specific came up so... Bought a Hanes manual - it says basically the whole power train has to come out from under the car. Is it possible to remove the engine/trans from the top? At first glance (closer look when I get home next week) under the hood it looks do-able what am I missing?
I suspect corporate is trying to discourage the DIY'r by documenting the "out from under the car /need a lift to do it" scenario and push the work towards "professionals" / dealers? Am I wrong?
Thx

Pretty sure you can take it out the top. Hell if I can take the motor out of my car out the top I dont see why you cant. In my ep3 we have to take the radiator and everything off the front to do it. But you have more room in yours so it should come out the top. Though you might have to take the radiator out as well.
Re: 2004 Civic engine removal
It is a lot easier to take the engine out of the bottom then it is to take it out the top...Regardless of transmission type (auto or manual) its in your best interest to take the subframe out and drop the transmission. once you drop the transmission only then can yu pull the engine out the top. when i took my engine out i dropped both the transmission and engine out the bottom. Its not difficult but your either going to need some 4ft jack stands and a cherry picker or a 4pt hoist.
Re: 2004 Civic engine removal
Just curious to as why you need to take out your engine? Its not that bad, the trans comes out through the top (you need to remove the coolant passageway attached to block on the trans side of the engine (which is easy), then the trans comes right up the top, then im sure you could get a cherry picker and pull the engine out.
Re: 2004 Civic engine removal
you have to unbolt the coolant passageway on the left side of the motor, remove battery, battery tray, intake (of course), unbolt slave cylinder, and itll come up.

it is a lot easier to pull the engine out of the top. the only reason to ever drop the subframe is if you have to replace the subframe never pull it if you have to cause then you have to realign the subframe. and it is such a bitch to do it from the bottom i had to do it on an auto to manual swap once never again.
it takes me about before I went turbo about an hour and half to pull the motor and trans out the top. of course if you just need the motor and not the trans I came up with a new way to pull the motor. take off intake mani, header, water neck, pull power steering, and pull of the crank pulley and lower timing cover then unbolt the trans from the block and the front motor mount and side motor mount. this way you don't have to mess with your alignment. other wise if you are pulling both trans and motor. start by taking off intake mani, power steering, header, battery and tray, clutch slave, disconnect the water lines on the water neck and back of the block disconnect the shifter cables on the trans and the three 12mm bolts that hold the cable block on. attach hoist. then remove the front and side motor mount, and remove the 3 big bolts that hold the rear motor mount to the trans next to oil filter(my help to remove that). and then unbolt the trans mount the aluminum piece bolted to the trans. lower it all down unbolt the trans mount from the side of the frame and then lift it up and out oh and disconnect your wiring harness at some point during all of this.
and if you don't have a/c unbolt the crash bar and pull the radiator gives you a lot more room to work with if you have ace unbolt it from the motor and have some one make sure you don't pinch or tear the lines while pulling it out

1.7 Vtec, automatic trans, engine removal.
Must remove engine at 30 degree angle. Lift from driver's side,

using floor jack, drop trans side to ground into cradle and lift straight up at 30 degree angle.

Engine not removable if engine kept level, engine is 1" to big.
I kept all the accessories, intake, and exhaust manifolds installed, A/C and power steering lines disconnected instead. ABS unit needed removed for clearance. Disconnected harness from INSIDE FIREWALL(4 plugs behind glovebox), is much easier than removing harness from engine.
First search for honda engine removal brought me to this recent post, so here's some pictures.

Re: 2004 Civic engine removal
Merry Christmas! Just signed up!
I have JUST tried to pull my transmission out through the top, I have all parts removed- battery tray, passenger side engine mount and coolant juncture thing on left side of engine. Even have the tranny disconnected and supended from the ceiling...its an effing c*#t hair to tight
...Any suggestion other than droping my subframe? Trying to avoid that if possible. Must get this job complete before New Years! Help!
oh yea btw shes an 05 manual coupe .

Tell me, what are the hoist point you used to remove the engine out of the car? Are there hooks or something?
Thanks
Btw, was your car wrecked or something?

The pictures weren't clear enough.
I've been trying to locate them on my engine, but didn't found any.
