many problems, please help, engine cutting out!
many problems, please help, engine cutting out!
Alright, first post ever
I very recently bought a used (280 000km) 2001 Honda Civic Coupe Si
I am very happy with my purchase but there are a number of problems:
(in order of importance)
1. when I start the car after not having driven it for half a day or so, it's idle rev is at 1,100 rpms (even after 5 mins of idling), and it drives very harshly, the car shakes very hard back and forth, with the driving power cutting in and out. After about ten minutes or so of driving, the idle revs come down to their proper spot at 200 or whatever rpms (stick shift) and the car smooths out and the power is at my foot whenever I want it. However, the engine has completely cut out on me twice already, on the road, so I'm very concerned.. what could it be? what to do??
2. the check engine light is on with p0113, intake air temperature sensor high input, I'm thinking of picking out the part from the junkyard, as Honda sells it for 85, but I have no idea at all where the part is located
3. The back of my car says Si, the engine says Vtec, but how do I really know it's actually an SI, with an actual Vtec? the fastest 0-100km time I've got so far is 10.8 seconds...
A buddy told me to ask a forum all my questions. So people of the internet, please help me out, especially with the first problem
Your time and answers are appreciated

Re: many problems, please help, engine cutting out!
With that many miles on the car it probably just needs some good maintenance to be done man.
1). Change all your spark Plugs. That will more likey cure the stalling problem and shaking back and forth during shifting
2). Idling high, you may have to just clean you IAC valve or replace it. It should be on the throttle body. (follow the throttle cable in engine compartment, where ever it attaches to that is where throttle body is). Idling of 200rpm is too low, I think they usually idle around 700-750rpm.
3). Unusual but check engine motor mounts some of them could be damaged, a bad motor mount will cause hard shifts since the engine is flexing too much under load.
Try those three, they are not expensive to do and u can do it urself.

Re: many problems, please help, engine cutting out!
Guess you are from canada since you have a 01 si cause the si up there is our ex so. The check engine light for the intake sensor is probably mostly the problem. The sensor is just pluged into the intake pipe where the throttle body is. Just go out get another sensor and install it and then reset the ecu and see if that helps. And it might just need a tune up also like spark plugs, oil change, air filter change.
Re: many problems, please help, engine cutting out!
thank you to both of you!
I've listened to your advice, I've gotten an oil change.
Bought an air filter and some new plugs, hopefully that'll take care of the engine problems, I'll keep you guys posted, thanks again!

Re: many problems, please help, engine cutting out!
First off, thank you all for messaging
I took your advice and did the following:
-changed air filter
-changed spark plugs
-bought some fuel system cleaner and put it in the tank
The car has definitely improved, so thank you, not too much faster but the idling problem is fixed, and I don't feel like it's as likely to stall on me, and it hasn't...so far
HOWEVER, anytime I start the car, the first minute or so of the drive is very choppy. When I gear up, the car lurches back and forth with power cutting in and out. After driving about 2km it evens out and the rest of the drive is normal.
I don't think it could be the engine mounts, because after a little while she runs very smoothly, I have no idea at all what it could be...
Any ideas?
Also, the air temperature sensor had a loose wire that I hadn't noticed because I had no idea where it was located, so thanks for helping me find it, that problem is fixed. And thank you lazlong for offering me one for the cost of postage, very kind of you!
ALSO The stupid windshield washer fluid light is the last one on, I didn't mention it before because I thought it was on because it wasn't topped up. But it's full, and the washer sprays fine, why would that light be on? and how can I get rid of it? (i already pulled the fuse to reset the ECU)
So choppy engine and windshield washer light, thank you again
