Honda bulletin for rear deck rattling

Ok, I've gotten multiple inquiries about this, so I'll create a thread for this info.

That Honda bulletin for the rear deck rattling is IX-5-01: Loose Speaker Bulletin (first letter is an "i" )

They wrote on my invoice: "bulletin applies to this car and the rattling rear deck - pieces ordered to correct this problem"

I had to bring my car back after they got the pieces... not sure what they were. From what I can see, they added some padding directly in between the plastic deck and the metal frame underneath. They also wedged some metal pieces into the area where the deck meets the rear windshield... all under warranty of course. And the rattling is now completely gone.

If your dealer is unwilling to fix this for you, tell them about this bulletin number.

But will the dealer be willing to fix this, if you have changed out your speakers. My dealer is kinda snakey like that, and probably wouldnt do it. They can kiss my

I might take my car in and have them fix it for me, it hasnt made much noise since I put my new 6x9's in, but I think I would like to have it looked at anyway.

yes, all 7th gens. If you're not having any rattling problems, I wouldn't take it in if I were you. You may end up having new rattles you never had before

hmm... that's a good question. I think it all depends all how good (or bad) your dealer is about these kinda things. But this bulletin should definitely give you more ammunition to work with to get them to fix it.

My car's rattling was also intermittent... usually only when it was cooler. But my dealer did not put up a fight, which was good.

If you keep having this problem and they keep refusing to fix it, I would call Honda of America and tell them about your problem and the service bulletin.

well, I just had my civic in for a bunch of different minor issues (all under warranty), one of which was the rear deck rattle. I mentioned the service bulletin and they told me they would check out. When I picked the car up that night, the guy told me that they found the problem and it was the service bulletin. So they fixed it and the rattle was gone, or so the tech told me.

I've had it back for a day now and I can safely say that the rattle is still there... My warranty is almost done and I don't want to waste my time at the dealership. Anyone know of anything I can do to fix this myself?

Ok, try this...

When you look from the trunk area up at the metal frame supporting your rear deck, you will see several openings. If you stick your fingers up into some of these openings, you will eventually feel the plastic of your rear deck. Try and stuff foam in there, or cut small pieces of rags and stuff them into any small gaps in between the plastic deck and the metal frame. Try to do this for as many of these small openings as you can. (note: not all of these openings will allow you to reach the plastic of the rear deck, but most will ... )

So is this actually a vibration or is it a rattle? The reason I 'm asking is because lately when I back out of my driveway I hear a vibration coming from the trunk area or the rear deck area. Sometimes when I 'm in first gear and start rolling I 'll hear it for 1-2 sec or when I make a turn at low speeds. I usually have the radio on so I have not heard it when it's quiet in the cabin, and by the time I react and turn the radio off, it's gone.
Did you guys experience this rear rattle/vibration constantly, frequently, seldomly? My gut feeling tells me it's the same rattle you guys had but mine is just starting out as everything in the car is loosening up (over 26k mi.) so I only hear it for 2-3 secs at a time and then it's gone. I 'm sure it 'll become more frequent and I 'll have to bring it in. Well that would be problem #5 or actually the 5th visit to the dealer. The problems are numerous, I just don't bother bringing it in..

Harry: it's a rattle, and it's unmistakable. On mine, even if I just tap the rear deck with my hand, I could hear the rattle coming from somewhere underneath. Much more than just a vibration. Came and went, and was usually bad when it was colder. But got progressively worse until it was always there.

Hey Ronin,
I have had that damn vibration for almost a year now! Now I just crank up the tunes or the engine so I can't hear it, but I mentioned it to my Honda dealer and they said they would fix it when I go in this week.

Thanks man!

thanks Ronin.
I 'll get mine fixed when it gets worse (because I want the dealer to hear it too) or when something else goes so I can kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

I know this is an old post, but I'm still hoping somebody will help me... I talked to my dealer about this and they said it doesn't apply to listening to music, it only applies to driving down rough roads and that I would have to take it out on the road with them and show them the rattle. Mine does it sometimes with no music but its much worse and more noticeable with music going. What should I do??? Should I just try to fix it myself? I've also replaced the stock 6x9s with pioneer 3-ways that are really nice, and I'm worried that when the dealer gets it open they'll tell me too bad. Help please!!!

My rear deck rattling definitely had nothing to do with the speakers... it was something loose right underneath the 3rd brake light. But the dealer quoted that Service Bulletin I listed above on my invoice.

Bulletin or no bulletin, just tell your dealer you want your deck rattling fixed. Tell him it has nothing to do with your speakers, and that it's a car defect that they should fix under warranty.

If that still doesn't work, you can always try to stuff some old rags or socks underneath that area. Lots of people here have fixed this problem by doing this.

Is there anyway that you can get some pics of the pieces you saw them put in?

I actually noticed a decrease in the rattling after I put my aftermarket speakers in....

(Stupid rear deck removal, I will figure out a way to get the speakers out without removing the WHOLE FRIKKIN THING!!!)

Re: Honda bulletin for rear deck rattling

Don't mean to resurrect this old thread but I've also had this issue on my pre owned 2003 civic lx, since my warranty was up I came up with a fix myself. Its pretty simple, what got rid of the constant rattling was pulling the back seats down. What's weird is if I take the head rests off the downed back seats, the noise comes back.
