Rep Power: 0 What are fogs for ? ...
Pardon my naivete, but what are Fogs for ?
I've just bought a 2002 Civic LX-G Sedan (roughly the Canadian equivalent of the US EX minus the sunroof ans VTEC engine) and it came with the dealer installed front fog lights.
Several days ago, I drove through a few kilometers of relatively dense fog and I was deceived by the uselessness of this $647 CDN option : all I could distinguish was a mere ten feet or so in front of the car.
I had always thought that, being installed lower than the headlights, fogs provided a deeper illumination of the road, and at the same time, by allowing the headlights to be turned off, eliminated the blindening effect of the fog no longer illuminated by them. The ironic part is that here in Canada, the headlights cannot be turned off while driving ...
So, unless my fogs are seriously out of alignment (in which case I would appreciate someone showing me how to align them), I find that fogs are to the most a very nice (and expensive) ornamentation.
Any comments ?
Another question : I hear that in certain european countries (of which Great Britain, I presume) Hondas come with REAR fogs as standard equipment. Does anybody know where they are installed (bumper, rear window, spoiler?), what they look like and in what way they can be useful ?
Just asking.

Rep Power: 0 BamBam, it depends on what kind of fog lights u have. I have a fog lights installed in my crv and it is serving its purpose. However, I still don't have fog lights installed in my civic because I am still looking for a brand that will surely serve its purpose, to penetrate thru thick fogs. sad to say, most fog lights installed in cars (with the exception of subaru fog lights), most of them doesn't serve it purpose, but only acts as an accessesory for the cars' looks.

Rep Power: 0 if you want to try adjusting them, there is a philips-head screw driectly underneath each foglight right behind the lip of the bumper. give that a few turns and it will raise and lower them. i have to adjjust mine today actually. you could also try replacing the bulbs in your goglights. i believe they are h11.

Rep Power: 0 Actually, 02Si, I paid half the suggested retail price of $647 CDN, installed (it supposedly takes 2 hours to install the Honda fogs).
To my mind, this is not even a deal, given that these fogs don't really do the job.

Rep Power: 0 i got my oem foglights for $125 and installed them myself. it does take about 2 hours, trust me. the inside wiring doesn't take too long but there are a couple parts that were a pain when you get around the fusebox. the thing that takes a few minutes is that you have to cut out the bumper. the oems look phat as hell though. like i said, try to position the beams a little higher or go get some better bulbs.

Rep Power: 0 Unfortunately I think most fogs are wired to run with the low beams, which is pointless since the low beams will be reflecting fog back. You can wire it differently though.
The "ideal" fog light is:
- Operates independently of headlights, so that you can use it without headlights on, so that fogs are the only light source
- Good cutoff so light doesn't stray upwards and into other drivers' eyes
- Wide beam to illuminate forward and periphery
There is some debate about light color, but I think amber or plain (white) halogen is a good bet. Blue light has more glare (counter productive for fog)
