2001 Honda Civic

I have a 01 Civic EX and had the transmission crap out on me today at. I called the local Honda dealership and Honda does not stock a new, rebuilt, or used transmission for 01-02 nor a rebuild kit.

If I stick in a used 01-02 transmission I know I'm going to have the same issue within a few thousand miles so I'd really like to step up to a newer year. After a few hours of searching I have yet to come up with an answer.

Does anyone have any knowledge about interchange with 03-06 transmissions? I would really like to not have any check engine light issues however, a working car is better than what I have right now. I appreciate any one's input on the matter!

try to find a good condition 04-05 trans. but the best idea. is get the TCI master racing rebuild kit and have someone rebuild your old trans with it. comes with all new upgraded clutches (to replace defective oem ones) and everything you need to make it better than new.

Re: 2001 Honda Civic

Gearbox, thanks for the quick reply!

My symptoms and the internet consensus does seem to be the 1st/2nd gear clutch and the kit is pretty reasonably priced.

I have never rebuilt a transmission before, but I have rebuilt a few engines. Auto transmissions sort of have a stigma to them but is it reasonable to rebuild the transmission yourself? Has anyone here rebuilt a Civic trans before?

only a couple people that i know. if you are good with taking apart stuff, you may want to give it a go if you can afford the down time. its just a very nitpicky process making sure everything goes back the right way and in the right order. you definately need a honda service manual and it may take a couple weeks if youve never done it.

theres alot of info around here, i found a couple good ones altho some pics arent working but it gives you an idea.

Re: 2001 Honda Civic

I have a 2001 civic LX 4dr AT with ~82,000 miles. The transmission is original and still runs like new. Be sure to change the fluid regularly as bad fluid is the most common reason of transmission failure (I and my mechanic friend's exp.). I recommend you change the fluid for every 10k miles and use Honda's ATF. And check the used oil. If the fluid is still red and no metal deposit, then your transmission is in good shape.

Sounds like the 10k-mile changing interval is too short right? But remember that preventive maintance can save you a lot. I also have a 1988 Accord 3dr LXI. It still runs with original transmission and shifts smoothly and quickly, and for the best part, it can still return ~30-32 mpg.

Re: 2001 Honda Civic

yeah its a good idea. i always do mine once a year or 10k miles with atf z1 honda. i also have the honda external fluid filter and B&M supercooler, but it did not help unfortunately and mine still started slipping at 50k miles. some of them just had weaker clutch packs that fall apart no matter what. there was a service bulletin but ofcourse it was not released until all the 01-02 were out of factory warranty. i can still baby mine and drive around well enough, but its only a matter of time before it goes.
