Heater either too hot or to cold, nothing in the middle

Heater either too hot or to cold, nothing in the middle
Hi
My 2002 Civics' heater either blows out the coldest air possible or (nearly) the hottest. if i have it on fully cold, just one level (slight turn) up on the dial and i get full on heat.
It was all working fine, until a month or so ago.
I don't think its the thermostat, as the engine temperature is fine and the heater temp does not suddenly change after some time.
Any thoughts ?
