Question Okay Honda civic?

Hey guys,

I am 15, turning 16 in a few months, and my first instinct was to get a Honda Civic

Now I live in Louisville, Kentucky (Please hold redneck jokes for someone who cares

Anyway, I have been looking for some good Honda Civics around here, mostly ones seem like good deals, while also being able to turn heads from a mile away (Pun intended)

I've just recently spotted this 89 Honda Civic SI
http://louisville.craigslist.org/cto/1570302347.html

I was going to take a public opinion on how you all think it looks and stuff.

I'm not a big fan of going to my friends showing them a car, considering most 16 year olds here have piece of **** cars.

Also, if you all see any nice ones being sold here, feel free to post them here.

My budget is relatively big, considering I run my own website (Bet that's a new one.)

Post away

Re: Okay Honda civic?

no reason a 16 year old needs a NOSed out car, look for something newer, it took me months to find my first car this past summer, I ended up with a black 2002 Civic DX sedan with 97k miles, it was a one owner car and in best shape of any car I could find, and it was 5000$, all the cash I had saved after highschool graduation party and working for months.

best advice I can tell you is to look for newer cars if you can, newer parts also help out. Check out Autotrader.com and take your time, no need to rush and buy something that will have engine/tranny issues. Find something thats solid and without mods. That way you can put what you want on and know someone wasnt driving it like an idiot and beating the engine.

keep looking and pass on that '89....21 year old first car will cause you problems down the road. Id suggest looking for something pretty much close to stock, no engine swaps because they can always lie about the miles on it....when in doubt if they dont have paperwork for repairs... pass

Have a local mechanic also look possible cars you want, they will help you out and tell you what needs down to it so you can hangle down the price if it needs work

best of luck

Don't get it. Once you start modding a car, no one will want to buy it.

The reason being, they don't know how well of a job was done, or how many short cuts were taken. That's how I would feel about this one.

Re: Okay Honda civic?

Get something newer.

Don't get a 21 year old rusted out shitbox.. since you have a "relatively big budget" considering you "run your own website", you should be able to afford a nice 7th Gen or at least a later 6th gen (99-00)

That car is going to be nothing but issues.

^This^ Be very weary of cars you buy that are already modified. You have no idea how well the work was done and what is legit. Buy a car that's newer. You say your budget is pretty high, so use it. Buy quality. Preferably buy something stock. If you want to modify you'll have a nice clean slate to start with and you can modify it the way you want to modify it and you won't have to waste time or money undoing someone elses work.

Thanks you all.

I'm not very "Mechanical savvy" myself, so DIY mods probably wouldn't turn out so well, would most MODS cost a lot if I were to go pay someone to do it? My girlfriend's dad actually works in a shop (Very trusted) and I am sure they wouldn't over charge me for anything.

I'm primarily looking for the basics
Rims, tires, full body kit, exhaust and possibly turbo in the future.

Re: Okay Honda civic?

You can get a set of name brand 17" wheels and tires from most of the big online stores for around $700. You can always go cheaper or much more expensive, it's really up to how much you want to spend. Smaller wheels cost a bit less, and bigger wheels cost a bit more. You can get a name brand cat-back exhaust for around $300 and up. An AEM short ram intake will run about $150.

These are all basic mods that you can do yourself in your free time with a couple tools. Shops in my experience generally charge anywhere from $75 dollars an hour and up for labor. You can purchase parts online or wherever and have them installed, but keep in mind some places charge more for parts that you didn't buy through them. If your father in law works in a shop it sounds good to me. There are a lot of members on here selling some good stuff on the cheap, most of it slightly used but generally well cared for. If you're looking to do a few budget mods, the selling forum is a good place to start.

A body kit is something else. You can spend as little or as much as you want. There are a few different materials you can get, and you generally what you pay for. The more expensive it is, generally the better it will fit and the less modification will have to be done to it to fit correctly. However, unless you have experience with fiberglass or stuff like that you'll need someone to do it for you. That is very labor intensive stuff. Then on top of that, you have to get it painted. Paint is also another one of those things that you get what you pay for. You can't take your **** to Maaco and expect it to last or even match the rest of your paint.

Shop around for what you want man, it's all up to you. Like I said a lot of it depends on how much or how little you want to spend. Good luck with your decision.

*edit - sorry lol, not your father in law, your girlfriends dad, just remembered you're not even 16, hopefully you won't have one of those for a while.
