2005 Honda civic tps/ TB? help need honest people!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2005 civic lx auto- bought 3 mos ago, no warrantee- here's the whole story in case it helps:
1 month ago car unable to accelerate after stopping at red light with a noise as if I am pressing gas with it in park, yellow malfunction lamp comes on. As manual said, gas cap WAS loose- then car drives fine and light goes off after 3 trips.
Few weeks later same light and weird driving, gas cap may have been loose- didn’t feel like it- but then car drives fine and light goes off after 3 trips.
Few days later- light on and weird driving but gas cap is NOT loose and light doesn’t go out. Car can drive at higher speeds but cannot accelerate after I slow down a lot or stop. Have to restart car at every red light to get it to accelerate a little better. Mechanic pulls a p0122 code (tps malfunction and may be an intermittent problem) but he says cannot replace only the tps, need whole throttle body. Resets the code so light goes out and drives ok, but light comes on 3 trips later, again just after accelerating. Mech resets it again and its ok- but seems to lurch forward as if I’m slamming on the brakes while at low speeds or coming to a rolling stop. Accelerating very slowly seems to keep the light out and car driveable for this week.
Looking online- people say TB can be cleaned, mechanic says no, Honda says yes. Other say wiring problem, mech said “wires looked ok” Honda says maybe. Both say maybe to the TB replacement.
Honda charges $120 for diagnostic, which they say may or may not lead them to the definite solution. Labor $109/hr. TB itself is $350 through Honda which they say I should not get anywhere else. Mech said code says computer may have to be reset so he didn’t think he could do it. But honda says anyone can replace it and comp doesn’t have to be reset.
Bottom line and questions-------who should I believe? Everyone says the TB itself rarely has to be replaced. In the interest of being poor not getting ripped off, should I skip the diagnostic and just get the TB part and have my mech do it? Can I get it anywhere but Honda? Should I get the honda diagnostic in case its just dirty or worse, wiring problem that my mech doesn’t see? Is cleaning even possible or a culprit of the symptoms described? Did having a loose gas cap too often break the Tps?
Has anyone had the same problems described and what was the solution?
Thanks I am a clueless chic if you haven’t figured it out, with no smart men around who know **** about cars!

Re: 2005 Honda civic tps/ TB? help need honest people!
same happened to me once. tps sensor hi voltage, and the car would barely drive. the tps is riveted onto the throttle body and very hard to change just the sensor and calibrate it. plus an aftermarket sensor goes for over $150 so not worth it. its much easier to replace the whole thing as a piece, with all the sensors bolted on. and goin with honda part is the safest bet. fortunately, a working used TB goes for around $50 on ebay. thats where i got mine. and they are very easy to change. just a few bolts and cables and sensors to unplug, then the new one goes in and you do the idle learn. should be back to normal. a loose gas cap would not cause any of those problems. when you get the new throttle body, be sure to take it apart and clean the IAC valve screwed to the side of it because it can get gunked up and affect idle quality (when youre not pressing the gas). be sure when you look for the tb on ebay, you get the correct one for your trans (auto or manual) and engine type EX vs LX. otherwise 01-05 uses same part. the most important is the correct transmission type. i also noticed a brand new one on ebay for 280 if you really want new. an old one should work just as well.
brand new for auto trans. im not sure if you have auto or manual tho.

wow thanks soooo much that is helpful....you wrote 'when you get the new throttle body, be sure to take it apart and clean the IAC valve screwed to the side of it'
is that for both a new and a used one?

only for used. the new one will be ready to use. check the end of this post for how to relearn the idle, which must be done everytime the TB is removed and installed.
...
whenever the throttle body is removed, you must complete the idle learn procedure otherwise the car will not idle properly. to do this, start the car and warm it to operating temp. you can drive around to do this and should not have too many problems except unsteady idle. park the car and turn it off. open the hood, locate fuse box, and remove the FI ECU fuse.

put the fuse back in, close hood, and start the car. let it idle for 10 minutes in park or neutral without using any lights/accessories or pressing the gas. after 10 mins, shut the car off. start it again and go for a drive like you normally would. it will take upto a full tank of gas for the ecu to relearn fuel maps and readiness codes. the idle will be set immediately, but it may take a while til the ecu relearns everything and you start getting good mileage again.

wow thats awesome thanks a lot for your time...very helpful...I did purchase the new one thats on ebay- I just dont know if that comes with a gasket or anything else I need, waiting for a reply from the seller. I'll make sure my guy knows of this relearning business since he seems a bit intimidated by hondas

yeah be sure and change the TB/IM (the one between throttle body and intake manifold) gasket and you prolly need to get that from honda dealer. the old one is maybe okay to reuse, but i wouldnt take a chance. so you have an auto trans right? cause thats what the part i posted was for. it wont work if you have a manual. just tell him not to mess with the new tb at all like turning the screws and stuff lol. bolt it on and connect the sensors and cables.

yes its auto, and I got em down w/ the best offer thing. so this would be the gasket then? 10.42 here and honda said theirs is $30.

yup #1 is the gasket. majestic honda is a real honda dealer so its the right part. they do charge alot for shipping so its not much savings unless you buy a big order of stuff. you will prolly be paying almost $25 with shipping.
