Glowing Exhaust Manifold
Glowing Exhaust Manifold
I posted this on General with no replies so here goes.
We had the timing belt and water pump replaced about 2 weeks ago for routine mtce on a 2002 DX. The other night the car started running really rough, the engine light came on and when the hood was opened the exhaust manifold was glowing red. Next morning you could see a very small crack in the ex manifold. I was told it was the cat so I replaced it and the car ran fine on a 5-10 mile trip. My son jumped in the car after it had been off for a couple of hours and in about 1/2 mile the same problem happened. I haven't looked at it, waiting for first light. Could it be a bad O2 sensor?

Re: Glowing Exhaust Manifold
Well if you manifold was that hot more then likely you burned you O2 sensors out. What else happened to the car? Did you run your check codes?? Some thing is happening to increase increase combustion temps?? are you running learn.
Re: Glowing Exhaust Manifold
No fault light now only comes on when engine begins to stutter. I will take in to the mechanic on Monday as I assume the error code, if there was one, will still be in the memory. We checked and there are no visible cracks. Disconnected the upper O2 sensor and seems to be running fine. I'll replace it with a new sensor and see what happens. I'm wondering if a faulty sensor could have loaded extra fuel into the engine and have some unburnt fuel igniting in the exhaust manifold. (?)
Re: Glowing Exhaust Manifold
Just got the codes: 1362 TDC Signal, No Signal. When it started getting hot again, I disconnected the upstream O2 sensor and it seems okay. Now I don't know which to replace.
Re: Glowing Exhaust Manifold
FIXED!!!
The error code was correct. The TDC ( cam sensor) was sending erroneous info. Replaced it and all is good. It seems it is not uncommon for this failure to occur when the timing belt and / or water pump are changed. Hmmmm.
