I was driving down the freeway a couple of months ago, and I turned off the A/C for a minute, then turned it back on, a couple of times, then when I turned it back on there was a "poof" noise and then when the cold air started blowing some mist and an antifreeze type odor came out of the vents, reminded me of a heater core going bad, but it only lasted a few seconds.

But now it will blow cold for a little while, then it gets hot, so if I turn it off for a bit, then back on it will stay cold for a little bit, but not long.

I don't know much about A/C, but from what I've read, I don't know if the evaporator went bad, or if the expansion valve might have blown or something(hence the "poof"), or it could be the dryer, or the switch on the dryer which reads the system pressure and tells the compressor when to go on or off, or maybe even the compressor is bad. But the compressor runs when the air is cold, but if I look at it when the air isn't blowing cold, the compressor isn't running. The compressor does seem to put a pretty big load on the motor and I think it makes a little bit of a squeaking sound when it's running. So I don't know if I should replace the compressor,dryer,switch,and expansion valve, or how I can tell if the evap is O.K. .

The drain tube seems to be draining fine, quite a bit of drainage actually, I don't know if draining too much might be a sign of something too or not.

If anyone has any knowledge on how these things work I'd appreciate any input. Thank You.
