Paint on front bumper chipping/flaking off?

I bought my 05 civic coupe ex about a year from today. Lately the paint has been chipping off the front bumper.

From the picture below, the black spots are where the paint has come off. You can see a few lighter spots, and these are where a first "layer" is coming off. This is noticeable around the bottom right of the grill.

Does anyone know if this is a known issue with the paint job of this model?

Thanks for any help!

Sounds like rock chips to me. You must do a lot of highway driving or maybe driving on dirt / rocky roads which is causing your paint to chip off.

Yeah, I do highway driving, about 20 miles to work The only thing is that I've driven my other car the same route for over two years and never had a problem like this. Still have that other car and the paint on the nose is fine.

Think the only long term fix would be to get a nose cover?

Re: Paint on front bumper chipping/flaking off?

Its probably in your best interest. It will happen to just about any car over time. I drive 100 miles a day when I go to work all highway and my bumper on the 05 is starting to show it. I'm so stupid because I have a nose cover but It's not on the car. It has not quite started to chip yet as badly as yours. Get a nose cover but make sure you treat it correctly. Every few months take the cover off and wax the crap out of the bumper, and hood as if you were detailing your car. This will ensure that the color underneath the cover does not turn on you. Also good to make sure the nose cover itself is not scratching the car. Waxing does a lot to protect the car from stone chips, so maybe the other car has a better cover of wax on it??? That's all I can think of! Best of luck getting it protected.

Where did you buy the car from? it may have been previously repainted, and the paint may have been mixed wrong. Like a year ago i had to get a new front bumper painted. I used some paint that was mixed incorrectly and my paint is starting to come off my bumper as well. On my old cracked bumper which had an oem paint job, the paint never came off like that.

I'm loosing the clear coat on my 05 ex front bumper. The paint is fine but the clear coat is literally peeling off. Any ideas of how much it would cost to be repainted? Is it possible to get just the clear coat replaced? don't know much about paint.

It is possible to get the bumper re-cleared and the good news is it is cheaper than repainting the bumper

civ83, i would have to take a good guess here and say that whether you know it or not, your bumper may have been repainted at some points, maybe before you got the car. did you do a report on it before you bought it? it makes me think so, since you said it doesnt chip off your other car the same amount.

anytime you have a bumper painted, it ALWAYS has paint chip away with way way less effort and way way faster than an oem paint job. my front bumper had just been painted because of rock chips when i got the car, and its now worse after only 2.5 years than it was before it was repainted. that would be my best guess. oem paint is always done well and seems to last way longer than any paint job someone else does.

Any ideas on the cost from a Honda body shop versus non specific body shop? I don't really know anyone in my area to go to other then Honda.

for the most part, usually around double i would think. then again, you always have the assurance that if there is any small little problem at all. i mean like anything...you can say youre not happy and they will redo it. their work is also always guaranteed to be done right, and to last. especially with it being your front bumper, it may be a good idea to get a good job done since thats the part of your car that takes the biggest beating out of anywhere.

Sorry it took me so long to get back.

I bought it from a dealer out of town. The carfax was clean with one owner, so im not sure if there was repainting.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, the carfax was clean, with one owner.

I'm thinking I'll have to take mine to the shop sooner than later. I don't want this to get out of control!

Re: Paint on front bumper chipping/flaking off?

I stopped by a dealership and an auto body shop. Both of them said that the bumper has been repainted. A very bad job though. The color matched perfectly, but they apparently didnt use the right process. Both recommended getting a new bumper, which is what I'll be doing. I'm going to call the dealership I bought this car from and see what they will do in terms of helping pay for this repair.
