Can I replace 2001 auto transmission with 2005?

Hi,

I have a 2001 Civic LX, SOHC. I have to replace auto transmission. Can I put the transmission from 2004-2005?

Should I worry about engine, if it is from SOHC or VTEC model? I mean can I bolt auto transmission from VTEC to SOHC engine or vice versa?

well the vtec is sohc motor too. it just has different cam and head. but i think the ecu has different shift points for ex and lx. so the trans may be different from vtec and non vtec motors. im not really sure.

Yes it can be done, I have a 2001 lx and I swapped the auto trans with a manual 2004 trans from a lx. I think for the 2005 is the same thing.

Can I replace 2001 auto transmission with 2005?

Well, I replaced 2001 LX auto transmission to 2005 EX today. The initial intention was to switch LX to LX, but, as usual, somebody screwed up and shipped me EX. But as it was said in previous post the shift points are the same. And I drove it today on highway. Hope it will last for a while. I also installed external filter and cooler like Gearbox and other people recommended. Reduction of transmission fluid temperature should help, but nobody knows the statistics on that. thx for all info guys!

Re: Can I replace 2001 auto transmission with 2005?

I have a 2001 civic LX auto also...

I think I will need to change my tranny sooon as it is slipping..

Just a question about costs.

How much do the 2004-2005 Used auto tranny's go for?

Also how much do shops charge to put them in?

Thanks in advance

Re: Can I replace 2001 auto transmission with 2005?

its a big job, usually 1500 for a used trans and maybe another 1500 for labor or more. anywhere from 3000-5000 ive got estimates for. drive it til it dies. mine had been slipping for almost 40k miles and im almost at 100k now it still drives. how much does it slip? if its only 500rpms i say keep going as long as you can.

Re: Can I replace 2001 auto transmission with 2005?

It has been slipping for maybe a year now (maybe 20-25,000 km)

I notice it slips the worst from 2nd to 3rd...

Usually goes away once the car is fully warmed up....

Re: Can I replace 2001 auto transmission with 2005?

yup theres no problem then. that is the most common slip from 2-3 due to defective secondary clutch pack. if it goes away when warm, i dont think you have anything to worry about for a long time. when the fluid is too cold it is thicker and cant get between the parts as easily.

Re: Can I replace 2001 auto transmission with 2005?

Sorry for delay. You can find used transmission for $900-1100 from local auto recyclers with ~40-50K mi on it. But do not get earlier than 2004. You can also try to order it from on-line store. It takes about 4-6 hr to replace the transmission by mechanic at 65-85 $/hr. So it brings us to $1250-1600 plus ATF cost. If you want to install external filter and cooler it is additional ~ $100 parts+100 work. You can save on work if you install filter and cooler by yourself.

Re: Can I replace 2001 auto transmission with 2005?

yes you can. However, given the EX's transmission has a shorter gear ratio than the LX/DX's, acceleration will be slower than a stock EX engine/transmission setup.

Will a transmission from Japan work the same as a USA transmission without getting CEL.?

You could, but you shouldn’t unless you have it rebuilt and upgrade the internal filter to 04-05 version along with new clutch packs.
